The team at Northstar Yacht Sales has just listed the Viking 45 Open Shangri-La-De-Dah for sale. The owner’s asking price is $525,000—and that price includes the boat’s slip in Newport, Rhode Island, for the remainder of the 2024 cruising season.

Shangri-La-De-Dah is a 2005 build that is showing about 1,220 hours on its 900-horsepower MAN V-8 diesel engines. Service was recently completed by Bayside Diesel in Mystic, Connecticut, according to the brokerage house.

Recent upgrades to Shangri-La-De-Dah include Awlgrip paint from the waterline up (the topsides are light blue with a pure white house top) and a new suite of Simrad electronics, all completed in 2021. The electronics package includes five multifunction displays, redundant VHF radios, autopilot and high-chirp transducers.

As the team at Northstar Yacht Sales points out, this is a yacht that’s equipped to enter big-game fishing tournaments. The marlin tower with a full upper station is by Palm Beach Towers. Shangri-La-De-Dah also has six gunwale rod holders, six vertical rocket launchers across the back of the hardtop and four tower side movable rocket launchers. The triple 33-foot spreader outriggers are by Rupp.

The cockpit spans 119 square feet, which should give anglers plenty of room to move around when the bite is on. There are two bait freezer boxes, an insulated in-deck fish box with pumpout, and a Pompanette International Series rocket launcher table. A molded-in tackle center has a bait-prep station and drawers, and there’s a Dometic Eskimo ice maker for keeping the catch cold.

Raw and freshwater washdown systems should help with cleanup after the day’s fishing is done and the boat is back at the dock.

More rod stowage is inside, beneath the U-shaped lounge settee. Overall, Shangri-La-De-Dah is laid out for a cruising couple or to accommodate a fishing crew overnight.

There is one proper stateroom with a queen berth, along with a few other spots where people can stretch out to sleep. The layout also includes a galley and a dinette that can seat five people. The head has a stall shower.

Interior headroom tops out at 6 feet, 6 inches if there are bigger guys in the fishing crew.

Need to cruise under bridges to get out to open water? Shangri-La-De-Dah has a bridge clearance of 33 feet, 2 inches, according to the brokerage house. Beam on this yacht is 16 feet, 4 inches, and maximum draft is 4 feet, 6 inches.

For Sale: 2013 Sabre 48 Salon Express https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/brokerage/sabre-48-salon-express-simpatico-for-sale/ Wed, 07 Aug 2024 15:00:09 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=65524 The 32-knot Sabre 48 Salon Express Simpatico is on the market at $725,000.

Looking for a midsize Downeast yacht that’s Great Loop ready and family-cruise friendly? Simpatico, a 2013 Sabre 48 Salon Express Yacht has two staterooms, plus a cabin, accommodating up to five guests. Simpatico is on the market with Grand Banks for $725,000.

“Sabre is one of the masters of building classically inspired DownEast designs that incorporate modern styling details. Combined as a whole package, these details create a timeless, elegant, yet contemporary design. The proportions of the 48 work perfectly, in my opinion. The tumblehome of the transom flows seamlessly into a deck with moderate shear, which benefits from a cabin house design that is absent of any harsh 90-degree angles,” Yachting previously reported.

Powered by twin 550 hp Cummins 8.3L diesel engines paired toCMD Zeus 3800 pod drives with integrated steering and trim, Simpatico reaches a top speed just over 32 knots, but dial it back to a 27-knot cruise speed for a range around 315 nautical miles.

When reviewing a previous Sabre 48 Salon Express, Yachting explained that “Zeus is the azipod drive system developed by ZF and Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, and Skyhook is the wonderful feature that allowed us to hold station. The magic comes from the built-in GPS that communicates with the computer governing Zeus’s behavior to hold the boat captive within its coordinates-give or take a few feet. No less thrilling is the way these pods enhance the 48’s maneuverability, at planing speed and in tight quarters, when the speeds are so slow that conventional rudders become useless. Although this system lacks the feel of a traditional cable-operated system, it is quick and positive, even in reverse. In the docking mode, Zeus’s joystick lets you move the boat forward, backward, and sideways.”

Owners get this island berth in their stateroom as well as an en suite head. There’s also enough stowage for extended cruising. Courtesy Grand Banks Marine

Owners can easily board Simpatico from the swim platform and via the portside transom door. Relax in the cockpit’s forward-facing, L-shaped settee with folding table to starboard or on the aft-facing bench-style cushioned settee. Want to enhance your tan? Layout on the foredeck and enjoy a little alone time. Stainless-steel handrails and non-slip fiberglass soles are a few safety features provided to keep guests comfortable while cruising. For those who seek a little more adventure, Simpatico has an upgraded Freedom lift that secures a 11’4″ Boston Whaler tender that can shuttle guests to a private beach for lunch while the kids swim.

Simpatico’s pilot house is covered by a fiberglass hardtop with large windows on each side allowing natural light to illuminate the area. An open-air environment can be created when opening up the door and windows to the cockpit area, or keep it enclosed and take advantage of the A/C or heating system. Two Stidd leather captain’s chairs sit at the helm with an L-shaped settee adjacent on the port side, allowing guests to join the captain while cruising. Abaft the helm station in the salon is an L-shaped dinette with a folding table  to starboard with a bench-style settee that adjusts forward to complete the dinette to port. Guests have the option to enjoy a meal inside the salon, or have an alfresco dinner in the cockpit.

The 48 Salon Express has a galley-down setup, yet it’s bright thanks to the array of windows above. It’s also equipped with stainless-steel appliances and solid-surface countertops. Courtesy Grand Banks Marine

Simpatico has the following electronics and navigation systems:

  • Cummins DTS single-lever electronic controls
  • Cummins SmartCraft display (engine data, tank levels, vessel data, alarms)
  • Twin touchscreen Raymarine Axiom pro units
  • Raymarine Magnum wide-array radar
  • Triple windshield with wipers and washers
  • Ritchie Compass
  • Stazo 400mm custom teak steering wheel with tilt helm and Sabre logo
  • CMD helm with joystick
  • Trim tabs integrated in CMD Zeus pod drives
  • Autopilot integrated in CMD Zeus system
  • Skyhook GPS position hold system with dedicated GPS receiver

Down five wooden stairs from the helm station is Simpatico’s galley. The varnished cherry interior is complemented with a stainless-steel, stand-up refrigerator/freezer, stainless-steel convection microwave, solid-surface countertop, two-burner electric cooktop and a stainless-steel under-mount sink with cover and pull-out faucet. Cold goods can be stowed in the refrigerator/freezer while dry goods and galley accessories can be stowed in drawers and stowage lockers below the counter.

After a long day on the water, owners can retire to one of two staterooms located forward of the galley. The master stateroom has an island berth with an en suite head. The wood grains from the teak-and-holly sole up to the cherrywood ceilings glow and are offset by light-colored fabrics. Stow your personal belongings in drawers beneath the berth, drawers in the bulkhead abaft the berth and two hanging lockers. The VIP stateroom has a centerline island berth wth an en suite head. Guests can stow their personal belongings in drawers, drawers under the berth, stowage lockers and shelves. An additional crew cabin is available with a full-sized berth that could be used for extra stowage space, or maybe a room for a teenager seeking a little privacy.

Grand Banks stated, “Simpatico is a beautiful example of the popular 48 Sabre Salon Express. From 2013 to 2020, Simpatico was kept exclusively in freshwater (the Great Lakes) and stored indoors for six months of the year. In 2020, the boat came to Florida with her second owner and was only used from November to March each year, then stored inside a climate-controlled facility for the rest of the time. Having been kept on a stringent maintenance regimen and only exposed to the environment for half her life, Simpatico shows much newer than her age.”

Where is Simpatico located? The yacht is currently lying in Stuart, Florida.

Winter Custom Yachts 46 Reviewed https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/winter-46-reviewed/ Mon, 22 Jul 2024 19:00:07 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=65234 This versatile, near-40-knot walkaround fishing platform makes its debut as part of a mothership-and-game boat operation.

The post Winter Custom Yachts 46 Reviewed appeared first on Yachting.

Winter Custom Yachts 46
With an imminently fishable walkaround design plus a 35-knot cruising speed, this 46-footer from Winter Custom Yachts pushes the envelope of what a fishing boat can do. Courtesy Winter Custom Yachts

With several 38-foot walkaround boats on the water, Tim Winters and his team at Winter Custom Yachts in North Carolina have optimized the walkaround concept in order to take full advantage of its inherent versatility. Anglers are no longer confined to the limited space in the cockpit and have the freedom to fight fish 360 degrees. Even just taking the family on a shorthanded picnic cruise is safer and easier since everyone has full access to the bow without having to navigate a slippery deck.

If there’s a drawback to the walkaround design, it’s a loss of interior volume, as the boat’s command deck and salon are compact to accommodate the walkaround alleys that span the perimeter of the hull. To make up for it, Winter upsized his latest version to 46 feet. The result is Hull No. 37, Thumper. This 46-footer was designed to be a fishing tender as part of a globetrotting mothership-and-game boat operation, and is a tough-as-nails workhorse designed to fish hard and well.

Winter Custom Yachts 46
The satin-finish horizontal teak veneer matches the wood found in the owner’s larger yacht, which will serve as a mothership for the traveling operation. Courtesy Winter Custom Yachts

The 46 is a yacht tender, and it has yacht-level finish to match the mothership. Descending from the air-conditioned command deck via a semi-spiral staircase, the galley and couch are immediately below, along with a day head. The full-beam en suite master is forward, with a guest stateroom with twin bunks aft.

Power is a pair of 850 hp MAN i6 engines. At a 35-knot cruise, Thumper is riding comfortably while burning 60 gallons per hour; with 600 gallons of fuel, that’s a range of 350 nautical miles. At top hop, it hits 39.3 knots on initial sea trials while burning 80 gallons per hour. The performance illustrates the vessel;s efficient hull form and the CJR flow-aligned running gear and propellers.

A spacious, uncluttered cockpit is home to a Release Marine rocket launcher, which can be swapped out for a Release fighting chair when needed. Note the transom livewell and hidden tuna tubes in each gunwale. Courtesy Winter Custom Yachts

The program for this mothership-gameboat operation includes fishing adventures in far-flung destinations such as Magdalena Bay, Mexico and the distant seamounts off Costa Rica.

Other notable features on the Winters 46 include a 25 kW Northern Lights generator and a Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizer. The satin-finish interior showcases the builder’s woodworking talents, with the horizontal grain teak veneer selected to match the interior of the owner’s larger yacht.

On the command deck, the peninsula helm stretches from port with multiple Garmin displays as well as joystick control, FLIR night vision and omnidirectional sonar.

“Since our inception, I have strived to perfect every technique and component to optimize the unique fishing experience my clients want to achieve,” Winters says. “During the process, I work alongside my clients to make the build process enjoyable, so much that some have repeated the process several times. They recognize their boat is not only a fun venture, but it also affords an excellent investment. I never compromise on details and will always deliver the finest custom sportfishing boats that my clients are proud to own.”

Winters considers Thumper to be the ultimate gameboat, thanks to the smooth transitions from bow to stern with no steps to impede an angler as well as the boat’s overall size and nimbleness.

The 2003 Ocean Alexander 48 Altus accommodates six guests in three staterooms, is owner-operator friendly and is on the market for $349,000.

“The 48 seemed gifted with an easily driven hull. Given throttle, she rose to a plane with little fuss and reached a maximum speed of 25.4 knots at 3,000 rpm. At 2,700 rpm I recorded a speed of 20.9 knots-a solid cruising speed with a half load of fuel and an owner’s gear on board. I recorded low sound levels and the reading of 80 dB(A) in the salon at 2,700 rpm is worthy of note,” as previously reported in Yachting.

The cockpit has two rod holders for wetting a line. A tender is stowed on the foredeck with a davit for launching and retrieval. Enjoy excursions to a private beach or just take an exploratory ride around nearby islands.

Climb up a set of stairs to the flybridge to join the captain and relax on an L-shaped settee with table or take a seat in the companion helm chair, all while enjoying 360-degree views. The flybridge has a Bimini top for shade and a plastic enclosure to protect the space from the elements.

Jimbo, a 2017 Palm Beach Motor Yachts 45, is an owner-operator-friendly, two stateroom, two head express cruiser on the market with Grand Banks for $1.29 million.

Jimbo is powered by twin, 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels that are paired to pod drives. This 45-footer will reportedly spool up to 33 knots quickly, but dial it back to a 23-knot cruise speed for a range of about 325 nautical miles. The Seakeeper gyrostabilizer ensures a smooth and comfortable ride along the way. Volvo’s Penta IPS600 pod drives with joystick controls and bow thruster make maneuvering in tight spaces an effortless task.

Step aboard Jimbo through the transom door. The first things I noticed in the cockpit were the synthetic-teak sole, swim platform and the wet bar with Silestone countertop, two sinks, refrigerator and an ice maker. The extended swim platform is spacious enough for a few guests to catch some rays before taking a dip in the water. Rinse off with fresh hot or cold water at the cockpit shower and relax in two Italian folding deck chairs, forward-facing leather bench-style settee or the aft-facing leather bench-style settee. The cockpit is partially covered by the hardtop, offering guests the option of sun or shade.

Enter the salon via a starboard side door from the cockpit and the satin-finish teak cabinetry, teak drawers, high-gloss teak table and teak trim glow from the natural light flowing in through nearly 360 degrees of windows. Guests can relax on the portside L-shaped sofa with a removable teak table while catching the big game on the retractable 42-inch Smart TV with Bose surround sound, or join the captain on the portside companion bench-style helm seat and soak in those panoramic views. The aft galley is to starboard and has the following amenities:

  • Two-burner flush-mounted cooktop
  • Microwave, 110/120V 60hZ with magnetic wood cover
  • Solid Silestone countertop incorporating a large recessed stainless-steel sink with removable cover, designer faucet
  • Water purification system Seagull

The solid-teak cabinetry creates a warm and cozy vibe. Turn on the reading lights to take in one more chapter before falling asleep. Personal belongings are stowed in hanging lockers, stowage lockers and under-berth stowage lockers. The guest stateroom has a pullout double berth, custom carpet and LED lighting. Young Jong Ho, a 2013 Cabo 36’ Express, is a tournament-ready sportfisherman equipped for action. A custom engine package and properly balanced hull allow the vessel to ride high in the waves and promptly get you to the fishing grounds. Previous owners have recently spent over $150,000 in upgrades to keep Young Jong Ho in top condition. This battlewagon has been put on the market for $400,000.

Jeff Brown Yachts stated, “This boat isn’t just a ride; it’s an experience crafted for those who seek elegance and adventure. Step aboard and be captivated by its sleek design and attention-grabbing profile. The Cabo 36 Express stands out, promising a journey that goes beyond the ordinary. Inside, discover a world of comfort and style. Modern amenities and stunning finishes make every moment on this yacht a pleasure. Whether you crave a relaxing cruise or a thrilling fishing trip, this vessel is your ticket to both.”

Young Jong Ho is powered by twin 550 Caterpillar C-7A diesel engines, which will quickly spool up to 28 knots. Dial it back to a 23-knot cruising speed to optimize fuel efficiency and increase range. High-strength, stainless-steel double-tapered propeller shafts connect the diesel engines to the pod drives, which have 4-blade nibral propellers. Pod drives increase the vessel’s maneuverability, a plus for a sportfisherman.

Recent upgrades include the following:

  • New upgraded ZF Can-bus units
  • New pod harnesses have been replaced and rerouted to prevent potential moisture intrusion
  • Surveyed and hauled 2022: full cooling service, injectors, fluids, mains/transmission
  • New generator-updated control cards/panel
  • Raw-water pumps
  • New through-hulls
  • New Humphree interceptors

Young Jong Ho’s cockpit, or “dance floor,” is very spacious for a midsize vesse. Grab your rod from the locked stowage compartment and continue to the bait- prep center, which has a sink, rigging board, deep tackle drawers, lazarette and fishbox. Fresh bait can be stowed in a 40-gallon transom livewell with large overboard drains and LED lighting. There are four rod holders and a fighting chair that mounts to a reinforced aluminum backing plate. Open the transom door, which has a top gate, for getting that big tuna on deck. Stow your catch in two insulated fish boxes with a macerator pump-out system ,or the icebox fitted with a gasketed lid, gas spring actuator, full-length stainless-steel piano hinge and custom latch. Take advantage of the saltwater or freshwater washdown station before gearing back up at the bait-prep center for another round.

Young Jong Ho’s helm deck is just a few steps up from the cockpit. The captain takes control at the starboard side helm in a comfortable bench-style helm seat with an adjustable footrest. A companion bench-style seat that is reversible is to port. Face forward and join the captain as he cruises out to the fishing grounds, or switch to aft-facing and join guests at the port side lounge with a table. Stow your rods under the lounge and gear in the tackle center with drawers.

The Azimut Yachts Atlantis 45 is a two-stateroom, two-head performance cruiser. Power for the 47-footer is provided by a pair of 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels, which gave the yacht a top hop of 35 knots during our time on board. Cruise speed was 28 knots.

There is a lounge pad aft and a dining table abaft the two-seat helm for alfresco meals. Across is a double bench seat that converts to a 16-square-foot lounge pad.

At press time, there were 18 Azimut Atlantis 45s available, ranging from $645,000 to $1.2 million.

From the Archive

“But then, perception of space aboard the 45 is slightly skewed because the companionway is off-center, so what you may suppose to be the middle of the yacht really isn’t. The Atlantis 45 takes the builder’s midsize offerings in a new design direction, one that has proved popular on larger models. For yachtsmen looking for big-boat styling in a family-size express cruiser, the 45 may be worth a look.”

Ptarmigan, a 2002 Grand Banks 49 Eastbay HX, has entered the market at $525,000. The Grand Banks 49 Eastbay HX is known for its performance, comfort and classic style, along with a seakindly ride.

Ptarmigan is powered by twin 660 hp Caterpillar 3196TA diesel engines (1,220 hours) that are connected to bronze, five-blade propellers. Ptarmigan has a 45,000-pound displacement and quickly spools up to just over 30 knots. Cruise speed is about 25 knots. At 9 knots, range is a reported 1,200 nautical miles.

Step aboard Ptarmigan’s cockpit via a transom door from the full-beam teak swim platform. Padded, aft-facing mezzanine seating allows guests to really enjoy the spacious cockpit area, which could be used for entertainment, fishing or catching some sun. Hatches on the deck lead to the engine room and a Freedom lift secures the fiberglass inflatable dinghy.

Enter the helm deck and take a seat to port on the L-shaped settee. The settee has stowage under the seats and a hi-low table for dining. A reverse- cycle heat and A/C unit system keeps the helm deck cool in the summer and warm during the cold season. A heavy-gauge polycarbonate enclosure closes off the back of the bridge deck from the cockpit. A companion bench seat and a locker for stowage is forward of the L-shaped settee. A few additional guests can be seated on a settee to starboard, which is abaft the helm. Two skylight hatches over the helm, along with side windows and a center windshield, can be opened for salty breezes.

The helm has clear sightlines thanks to three large windows forward, along with sizable side windows, giving the helmsman a nearly 360-degree view. The space’s wood grain glows from the natural light that flows inside. Ptarmigan has a newly upgraded Garmin 17-inch multifunction display with chart plotter, autopilot, GPS, fishfinder, radar and remote-camera video display. The bow thruster and depth sounder can be a lifesaver when maneuvering Ptarmigan in tight spaces.

The U-shaped galley is located on the lower deck, which is down a few steps forward of the helm, on the port side and is adjacent to a dining/lounge area. Meal prep is made easy with the spacious countertops and a dual stainless-steel sink. Stow dry goods and galley accessories in cabinets above, or in cabinets and drawers below the counter. Cold goods can be stowed in the refrigerator or deep freezer.

Forward of the galley and dining area is the owners’ stateroom with a teak interior and teak-and-holly sole, which is found throughout the yacht. Owners can relax on a centerline queen-sized berth. There are cedar-lined hanging lockers to starboard, and stowage drawers on the port side with opening lockers beneath. Under the berth are two additional drawers, and the top of the berth hinges upward with a stowage space underneath, creating plenty of space for extended cruising. Owners also have access to the en suite head with a shower. The guest stateroom is amidships on the port side with twin berths, a hanging locker and additional drawer stowage under the berths with two drawers forward. The guest head is located on the starboard side across from the guest stateroom.

These are some recent upgrades on Ptarmigan:

  • 2019 – Water heater was replaced
  • 2021 – replaced Freedom Lift Arms
  • Three new hatches
  • New white boot stripe
  • 2022 – New Garmin electronics and mast was removed and refinished.

Ptarmigan has a wide beam which makes it a very stable ride in all sea conditions. The side decks are very wide making it easy for the first mate to handle lines during docking. Ptarmigan is also very comfortable below deck and in the pilot house.”

Where is Ptarmigan located? The yacht is currently lying in Seattle, Washington.

Viking Yachts’ 48 Sport Tower is one of three models built on the New Jersey builder’s 48 hull. For owners in the market for a serious midsize sportfisherman, HMY Yacht Sales has Honu Kai, a 2017 Viking 48 ST, listed at $1.689 million.

“Whether moving up or moving down throughout the Viking fleet, you will find these new Viking 48 models true blue-water champions in spirit, performance, accommodations and evolutionary prowess in the herald Viking tradition.” Viking says

Honu Kai has a 124-square-foot teak cockpit and is set up for pursuing pelagics with a Release Marine Teak Battle Saddle, a Palm Beach Tuna Tower, 34-foot Rupp outriggers and a livewell. The cockpit mezzanine seating is a great spot to keep an eye on the spread.

Forward, the enclosed and air-conditioned bridge deck has a three-seat helm station forward. Abaft the helm, there are two L-shaped dinettes to port and starboard.
