As the summer yacht charter season nears its peak, several popular charter fleets have added yachts in destinations all around the world.

In the Bahamas, Fraser just welcomed the 107-foot Burger Silver Seas. It’s a 1998 build that most recently was refitted in 2022, and that will base in the Bahamas all year round. Accommodations are for eight guests in four staterooms that can be set up for families or groups of couples. This yacht charters with an Intrepid tender for watersports fun.

Up in New England, Edmiston has welcomed 168-foot Feadship Acta to the charter fleet. Acta is a 2007 build that accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms. Equipment includes Quantum zero-speed stabilizers for guest comfort at anchor, and the yacht has a wheelchair-accessible elevator and side deck. The master stateroom is on the bridge deck with expansive views.

131-foot Westport

For charter clients seeking more exotic locales, IYC has just added the 131-foot Westport Rule No. 1 to its fleet, with inquiries being accepted through September 2025 for Panama, Mexico and Costa Rica. Rule No. 1 is a 2011 build that most recently was refitted in 2023, with accommodations for 12 guests in five staterooms. This yacht charters with a 37-foot Freeman tender for fishing, and has toys that include an inflatable slide.

75-foot Sunreef

Also available farther afield is the 75-foot Sunreef Diana, a sailing catamaran that’s in French Polynesia as part of the Y.CO fleet. Diana is a 2017 build that just completed a refit this year. The yacht accommodates eight guests in four staterooms. Amenities and crew services include a hot tub, a fitness trainer, a masseuse, a yoga instructor, and various water toys.

137-foot Kingship
Fraser’s 137-foot Kingship Ocean’s Seven, available in Croatia and the West Mediterranean, has interiors by Vripack, a full-beam master stateroom and accommodations for 10 guests. Courtesy Fraser

In Croatia and the West Mediterranean, the 137-foot Kingship Ocean’s Seven has joined the Fraser fleet. This is a 2012 build that was most recently refitted this year. Interiors on the yacht are by Vripack, with five staterooms for 10 guests. The master spans the full beam on the main deck and has a king-size berth.

Are there any options being advertised for scuba diving? Indeed, Edmiston says the 154-foot Feadship Lady Victoria is still accepting inquiries this summer in the Bahamas, and is offering scuba diving right from the yacht. Accommodations are for 12 guests in six staterooms, with a master that has its own deck and a VIP on the main deck. The swim platform can be extended and raised for diving, or submerged for guests who want to step right into the sea.

Refitting Classic Yachts https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/refitting-classic-yachts/ Thu, 25 Jul 2024 19:00:14 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=65311 Classic-yacht refits require a blend of craftsmanship and technology to protect heritage while modernizing systems.

Mariette, a 138-foot Herreshoff design, has traditional rigging and modern navigation technology. Nick Bailey

Not terribly long ago, the team at Edmiston excitedly announced that “for the first time ever—possibly the only time—two of the world’s finest classic yachts, Haida and Malahne, are available for charter in the Caribbean.”

It was an announcement nearly a century in the making. The 233-foot Haida was built in 1929 and had gone through a 16-month restoration that included modernizations to systems such as air conditioning. The 164-foot Malahne was a 1937 build whose 30-month refit brought the yacht back to its original looks, albeit with enhancements including modern fire-suppression and electrical systems.

Both yachts are examples of how today’s shipyards are finding ways to balance craftsmanship and heritage with the latest technologies and materials, ensuring that classic builds can remain on the water and be enjoyed for many more years to come. Within the worldwide fleet, there are countless opportunities for refits, restorations and repairs, but successful projects present numerous concerns when it comes to ensuring the legacy of design and construction.

“The immediate challenge is to ensure we provide the level of comfort that our clients expect from a yacht,” says Stefan Coronel, refit manager at Huisfit in the Netherlands. “Expectations have risen dramatically: increased comfort, reduced noise level, increased headroom and other ergonomic elements you wouldn’t easily find in a classic boat, and the difficult part is once we work to improve these expectations, there is the possibility of damaging the heritage of the boat.”

Talitha
Prior to a refit of the 270-foot Talitha, 3D scanning was used to get accurate hull measurements. Salva López

Coronel knows what he’s talking about, more than most. In recent years, Huisfit’s team has worked on refits and restorations ranging from the 121-foot motoryacht Fair Lady, which originally launched in 1928, to the 203-foot schooner Athos, which launched in 2010 and is now marketed as “the most technologically advanced classic sailing yacht built to date.”

Coronel says certain aspects of a refit still require handcrafted techniques to achieve specific finishes. Woodworking, in particular, has a tradition of craftsmanship that the industry is not keen to let slip away.

“I don’t see any way that woodworking can ever be taken over by modern technology,” he says. “There is no way you can get the same finishes from automated processes.”

The refit of the 122-foot Atlantide, a 1930 build, serves as a testament to this, he adds: “Specialists treated the wood on board with stones, deliberately creating scratches to treat the surfaces to achieve the unique antique look desired by the owner.”

Marcelo Penna, business development director at the MB92 shipyard in Barcelona, Spain, says custom carpentry details can be made with advanced technology, but an experienced carpenter with the same tools used 50 years ago is still needed to retouch joints, match wood grains and solve other problems.

“The reality is that custom projects require craftsmanship, requiring a handmade, unique approach, such as brass ventilation intakes, detailed bowsprits, or wooden masts and rigging,” Penna says.

Maltese Falcon
After an extensive refit in 2023, the 288-foot Maltese Falcon is again available for charter.

Yacht-building materials, of course, have also come a long way since the days when wood was the only option. GRP, honeycomb cores and carbon-fiber bulkheads are now the rule, not the exception.

However, Penna says: “There are materials you cannot simply replace or improve, such as brass or copper finishes. The same goes for interior maintenance through touch-ups or artwork care. Modern procedures might help, but the old polishing and restoration of fabric finishes generally demand traditional techniques by experts.”

Recent refit projects at multiple yards have included advanced technologies, such as 3D printing and scanning. In fact, with older boats that have limited or no original general-arrangement plans available, 3D-scanning capability can be a huge help.

“One advantage of using 3D scanning is the ability to reconstruct drawings of heritage boats,” says Gianni Paladino, commercial director of the Lubsen shipyard in Livorno, Italy. “It is also possible to map the interior volume of the boat to study restyling possibilities and from the point of view of the furnishings.”

Mariette
Pendennis Shipyard in the UK has specialized in yacht refits like Mariette’s for 35-plus years.

Penna says 3D scanning was among the tools used for the refit of the 270-foot Talitha: “We used a complete scan of Talitha’s hull using a 3D scanner, providing accurate readings and measurements of the complete yacht to ensure their drawings and specifications were updated accordingly and not drawings from the 1920s.”

Charlie Ross, operations director at Pendennis in the United Kingdom—which handled the Malahne refit—says some projects currently in the yard are also “embracing a more conscientious approach to innovation, specifically hybrid-power technology.” This kind of advancement is important, he adds, especially when it’s combined with attention to honoring a yacht’s heritage.

“We have to preserve the skills to enable efficient delivery of traditional skills to clients’ yachts, as well as embrace new technologies so that we remain at the forefront of being able to challenge traditional time and cost norms,” Ross says.

Penna says that while craftsmen such as carpenters are vital for maintaining an authentic appearance, “so is the incorporation of modern machinery. Striking a balance is crucial, as both are vitally important and can coexist.”

Atlantide
The wood on board Atlantide was hand-scratched with stones for an antique look. Mike Tesselaar

Ultimately, all these types of efforts lead to classic yachts being back out on the water, appearing as if they sailed straight out of their glory days, but with technology and systems on board that make boating safer and better for everyone.

As Pendennis put it after Malahne relaunched, that yacht is “one of a small number of prewar motoryachts to have survived until the 21st century.” Such yachts are an important part of maritime history and are well worth saving by any and all means possible.

Mariette

Pendennis has refitted the 138-foot Mariette several times. The twin-masted schooner was built in 1915, and the yard has utilized traditional techniques for replacing the deck and rigging hardware, and for installing davits. Navigation and communication systems are modernized.

Maltese Falcon

Lubsen handled the refit of this iconic 288-foot Perini Navi, which was delivered in 2006. Performance and emissions were improved by upgrading the generators and changing the main engine mufflers. Many of the same artisans involved in the build also worked on the refit.

Atlantide

This 122-foot motorsailer from the 1930s underwent a rebuild at Huisfit, preserving its original Gardner engines while using new technology for the onboard systems. The owner opted to maintain the traditional aesthetic, so traditional craftsmanship was carried out.

As the summer yacht charter season in the popular Mediterranean cruising grounds gets into full swing, Edmiston is bolstering its presence by adding three notable motoryachts to the fleet.

The first addition to the fleet is the 262-foot Oceanco Aalto, which is a 2007 build that accommodates 12 guests in their choice of nine staterooms—including an owner’s suite that takes up almost half of the upper deck and has two hot tubs. The crew complement on this superyacht is 24, creating a notable guest-to-crew ratio for a high standard of service.

Aalto’s guest spaces include a salon that converts to a cinema room, a sky lounge with a grand piano and formal dining, and a VIP stateroom on the bridge deck. An elevator runs from there down to the lower deck, and there’s a wellness area on board with a gymnasium, beauty salon and massage room. The sundeck is home to a glass-backed swimming pool with contra-flow jets.

154-foot Heesen Atina

Also new to the Edmiston charter fleet in the Mediterranean is the 154-foot Heesen Atina. This 2008 build was most recently refitted in 2022. It accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms, and it charters with 11 crew.

The refit work that Atina completed in 2022 transformed the sundeck to include a sizable hot tub and a lounge area. Interiors on this yacht are by Bannenberg. Edmiston describes them as “sophisticated.”

Last but not least, Edmiston has also welcomed the 207-foot Benetti Soundwave to the Mediterranean charter fleet for the summer season. This is a 2015 build that most recently was refitted in 2019. Soundwave accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms, and charters with 15 crew.

This yacht has two master staterooms, including one on the upper deck with a private deck. The other one is on the main deck with sole-to-ceiling windows.

Guest entertainment spaces on this yacht are particularly noteworthy. The sundeck has a jet pool with a design inspired by an English spa. This deck also has an Italian stone bar.

For shuttling guests ashore in high style, Soundwave charters with a 26-foot custom Benetti limo tender. The yacht has a strong history in charter, with comments available from previous guests.

Are there still summer dates available? Yes. According to the most recently available information, all three of these charter yachts still have dates open on their calendars for bookings in the Mediterranean from now through September.

The West Mediterranean remains by far the most popular destination in the world for summertime crewed yacht charters, and plenty of bookings take place in the Bahamas as well. For summer 2024, charter clients also have options in New England, Scotland, Norway and Croatia—including at least one yacht being offered for the first time.

Starting closest to home in New England, Fraser has welcomed the 164-foot Christensen Chasseur to the charter fleet. This is a 2016 build that most recently was refitted in 2022, and that accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms. The master spans the full beam on the main deck, and there’s a full-beam VIP stateroom belowdecks. A wheelchair-accessible elevator serves all the decks. New for guests to use this year is a 2024 Intrepid tender.

Baba’s is a 2020 build that accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms. Four of the staterooms have king-size berths, and the VIP is located on the sky lounge deck. An elevator services all decks.

Croatia and Montenegro are also on the itinerary this summer for charters aboard the 180-foot Rossinavi Taleya, which has joined the Hill Robinson fleet. A 2008 build that most recently was refitted in 2023, Taleya accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms.

Also in Greece is the Riva 110 Dolcevita Don’t Worry, which is now part of the IYC fleet. This just-delivered yacht is brand-new for 2024, with accommodations for 10 guests in five staterooms.

The remaining lower-deck staterooms have twin or convertible berths. Notable features aboard Crossed Sabre include a folding balcony in the salon, a sundeck hot tub, and an elevator with wheelchair accessibility.

What else is happening in the Bahamas? The Potlatch Club boutique hotel is expected to open on Eleuthera in June. It’s a property that was popular with visitors in the 1960s and ’70s before it fell into disrepair in the 1980s. It has been restored with garden cottages, ocean-facing cottages and ocean-view villas, along with a restaurant, bar, spa and gym.

Resilience

Edmiston has released a list of yachts that are still accepting inquiries for charter at the Monaco Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place May 23-26.

An important part of many charters at this event is the ability to host viewing and other parties for spectators on board. As such, charter clients should expect to incur additional costs beyond typical weekly base rates and expenses. Some yachts require a security deposit, for instance, or additional temporary crew to be brought on board to help with catering and service.

With that said, the 212-foot ISA Resilience can put on quite a show. It has the ability to host quayside events for as many as 110 guests. This 2021 build also has overnight accommodations for 12 guests with 16 crew. The master stateroom has fold-down balconies, and the VIP is on the upper deck with a private terrace.

Wayfinder

Also available is the 224-foot Astilleros Armon power catamaran Wayfinder, which can host quayside events for as many as 200 people. This 2021 build has overnight accommodations for 12 guests, and typically charters with 19 or 20 crew. Key features include a pickleball court, basketball hoop and gymnasium with various machines and equipment.

Jaguar

Yet another option for Monaco Grand Prix charters is the 184-foot Benetti Jaguar, which can host quayside events for as many as 80 guests. Jaguar is a 2005 build that most recently was refitted in 2023. Its overnight accommodations are for 12 guests, with a usual crew complement of 12. The master stateroom spans the yacht’s full beam, and the VIP is on the upper deck.

Ventum Maris
The 216-foot Ventum Maris can host events for up to 50 people. The yacht has a glass elevator that serves all decks as well as a cinema projector for showing movies on the sundeck. Courtesy Edmiston

Edmiston also is promoting the 216-foot Amels Ventum Maris for the Monaco Grand Prix, with the ability to host quayside events for as many as 50 guests. Ventum Maris is a 2011 build that most recently was refitted in 2019. Its overnight accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of seven staterooms, two of which can be set up with double or twin berths. This yacht has a glass elevator that serves all decks, and a cinema projector up on the sundeck for movie nights.

Allegria II
For those seeking a more intimate experience, there is the 92-foot Allegria II. The 2020 Ferretti accommodates up to 20 guests for dockside events. Courtesy Edmiston

Want a yacht for the Monaco Grand Prix that’s more midrange? Edmiston is offering the 92-foot Ferretti Alegria II, which can welcome as many as 20 guests for quayside events. It’s a 2020 build that has a sundeck bar and grill for entertaining friends with a good view of the action all around.

Rossinavi Parillon
The 157-foot Rossinavi Parillon will be chartering in the Caribbean until mid-Match and then it’s off to the Western Med. It’s currently offering a 20 percent discount for Caribbean charters until March 15. Courtesy Edmiston

Welcome to the season for charter-yacht deals and discounts. We’re now well beyond the high-demand holiday season, and the summer’s prime cruising months are still a good ways off. This means some yacht owners with extra weeks of availability between now and then are looking to incentivize clients to book.

One of the newly advertised offers is from the 157-foot Rossinavi Parillon, which is part of the Edmiston fleet. The yacht is giving a 20-percent discount on charter bookings in the Caribbean until March 15. (After that, the yacht is off to the West Mediterranean for the summer 2024 charter season.)

With the discount, the lowest weekly base rate drops to $196,000.

Parillon is a 2014 build that most recently was refitted in 2023. Accommodations are for 10 guests in five staterooms, including a full-beam master on the main deck. For guest relaxation, the beach club has access to a sauna and shower, well-positioned for use following an afternoon out on the personal watercraft, Seabobs and standup paddleboards.

Alessandra III

Also offering a deal right now is the 155-foot Sunseeker Alessandra III, which is part of the Fraser charter fleet. That yacht is offering a 15-percent discount on Bahamas charter bookings for the first five clients that secure dates this year. The usual lowest weekly base rate is $231,000.

Alessandra III is a 2016 build that most recently was refitted in 2022. Accommodations are for 12 guests in six staterooms, including a master and two VIPs on the main deck. The three guest staterooms belowdecks are convertible for twin- or double-berth setups.

Kontiki

Yet another charter yacht offering a deal right now is the 141-foot Varadero Maridueña Kontiki, which is part of the Edmiston fleet. This yacht is giving 25 percent off through May in Costa Rica, where the lowest weekly base rate drops to $120,000.

Kontiki has accommodations for 18 guests in nine staterooms. Four of the staterooms are connected, making them a good option for families that need more than one room. Eight of the nine staterooms have convertible berths.

A deal on longer-term charters: The 279-foot AKYacht Victorious is giving a 10 percent price break for charters longer than one week in the Bahamas. Victorious is part of the Fraser fleet. It accommodates 12 guests.

With the winter yacht charter season about to kick into high gear in the Bahamas and Caribbean, several top management companies have welcomed notable motoryachts into their fleets.

Perhaps the largest yacht in this category is Samsara, a 290-foot Oceanco that recently joined the Y.CO charter fleet. Brokers are now accepting inquiries for winter charters in the Bahamas and Caribbean (and for summer 2024 bookings in Greenland and Iceland) at a lowest weekly base rate of $1.1 million.

Samsara is a 2015 build that most recently was refitted in 2023, with accommodations for 12 guests in seven staterooms. This yacht has a private owners’ deck, swimming pool, gymnasium, massage room and hair salon, along with an elevator for guest use. “Her seven-cabin layout is ideal for multigenerational groups or two families traveling together,” says David Price of Y.CO Charter Management. “It offers the flexibility to suit many kinds of charter groups.”

Wayfinder Catamaran

Meanwhile, over at Edmiston, two notable yachts have joined the charter fleet.

First is Wayfinder, 223-foot powercat that Astilleros Armon built in 2021. This yacht has an unusual layout, with 11 en suite staterooms (nine singles and two with twin berths) for 12 guests, along with quarters for 20 crew. It can be booked as either its own charter yacht or as a support vessel for more traditional charter yachts.

Wayfinder has an open aft deck with a helipad that doubles as a pickleball court. This yacht also has belowdecks storage for six tenders and four Sea-Doos. The lowest base rate to book a week in the Caribbean is $300,000, with inquiries also being accepted for the Mediterranean and other destinations in summer 2024.

Also new to the Edmiston charter fleet is the 164-foot Home, a 2017 Heesen that will be in the Bahamas this winter at a lowest weekly base rate of $245,000.

Heesen Home

Home accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms, and charters with nine crew. Interiors are by Cristiano Gatto—Edmiston describes them as “crisp, light-filled and Ibiza-inspired.” For outdoor fun, the complement of tenders and toys includes a 34-foot Jupiter towed tender, a 21-foot Williams jet tender that can reportedly hit 35 knots, Sea-Doos, standup paddleboards, skis, inflatables, snorkeling gear and scuba equipment.

And, last but not least, IYC has added the 162-foot Christensen Remember When to the charter fleet, with bookings available this winter in the Bahamas at a lowest weekly base rate of $230,000. It’s a 2011 build that was most recently refitted in 2020, with accommodations for 12 guests in six staterooms. An elevator services all four decks, and the full-beam main-deck master has a private office.

Is it too early to call for summer 2024 yacht charter bookings? Nope. In fact, IYC also just welcomed the 90-foot Sanlorenzo SAL to the charter fleet. It’s a brand-new build for 2023 that’s currently accepting bookings for the West Mediterranean, Croatia and Montenegro in summer 2024.
