Keal Over, a 2019 Palm Beach GT50, is a performance cruiser sized for the cruising couple. Stay out all weekend, stay out all week. Keal Over has a max speed of 40-plus knots with a range of 350 nautical miles, making it ideal for island hopping or weekend cruises with friends and family. Keal Over’s owners are asking $1.499 million.

“Palm Beach maximizes salon space with a galley-down design. There’s a head with a shower that’s twice the size I’d expect to see on a boat of this nature. The two staterooms are similarly spacious. While many builders would try to add a third stateroom, Palm Beach instead kept the interior areas relatively open. It’s a smart move on a yacht that’s most likely to be used for day cruising and weekending with a couple or two aboard,” Yachting previously reported.

Grand Banks stated that “Keal Over is a 2019 model Palm Beach Motor Yachts GT50 in excellent condition! She has low hour Volvo Penta IPS 800’s at 600 hp each, Garmin electronics, sunroof, opening port window from salon to cockpit, removable sun awning, cockpit wet bar and more.”

Keal Over is powered by twin, 600 hp Volvo Penta IPS800 diesel engines, but reportedly have the performance of 1,600 hp straight-shaft diesel engines due to their pod-drive design. Keal Over will quickly spool up to 42 knots with a comfortable cruise speed of 32 knots, but dial it back to 21 knots to increase range to 350 nautical miles.

The fully infused carbon fiber hardtop has a sunroof measuring 59 inches wide by 40 inches long. It opens electronically, allowing the ocean breezes to flow through the helm and salon. The yacht’s windscreen and side windows gives the captain a 360-degree view and allows natural light to flow inside. This GT50 has the following electronics and navigation systems:

 • Garmin Navigation Package
 • 7607 Volvo Penta Display
 • Volvo Penta Autopilot
 • GSD 24 Fishfinder/Sounder
 • GMR Fantom 18″ Dome Radar

The GT50’s cockpit is laid out for entertaining with a pair of L-shaped lounges aft with a folding table, two Smeralda Italian deck chairs and a centerline walk-through to the swim platform. A wet bar with a refrigerator, ice maker, sink and stowage is forward and to port, including dedicated glassware stowage. Guests have the option of sun or shade with a Sunbrella sun shade that extends to cover the cockpit. Grill a few burgers for lunch on the grill to starboard before laying out to catch some rays on the foredeck sun pad.

Inside, the salon has dark wenge-wood accents and cabinetry set in contrast to the light-tone countertops, white headliner and a faux-teak sole. Stow cold goods in the AC/DC compatible Isotherm DR160 refrigerator and dry goods and accessories in locking cabinets above and below the countertop.

After a long day on the water, owners and guests can retire to one of two staterooms. The master stateroom has a custom island berth with the head and bunk boards finished in UltraLeather. The builder says the stateroom was designed with premium-quality upholstery, satin-finish wood cabinetry, custom carpet with acoustic underlay and LED overhead lights. Step aboard Ptarmigan’s cockpit via a transom door from the full-beam teak swim platform. Padded, aft-facing mezzanine seating allows guests to really enjoy the spacious cockpit area, which could be used for entertainment, fishing or catching some sun. Hatches on the deck lead to the engine room and a Freedom lift secures the fiberglass inflatable dinghy.

Enter the helm deck and take a seat to port on the L-shaped settee. The settee has stowage under the seats and a hi-low table for dining. A reverse- cycle heat and A/C unit system keeps the helm deck cool in the summer and warm during the cold season. A heavy-gauge polycarbonate enclosure closes off the back of the bridge deck from the cockpit. A companion bench seat and a locker for stowage is forward of the L-shaped settee. A few additional guests can be seated on a settee to starboard, which is abaft the helm. Two skylight hatches over the helm, along with side windows and a center windshield, can be opened for salty breezes.

“Everything I saw walking through the Grand Banks 54 illustrates actual strength and serious intelligence in construction,” Yachting previously reported

“The 54 is the kind of yacht that begs for a ride in the rough stuff, but unfortunately, I didn’t have challenging conditions when I ran it… Between its 8-degree transom deadrise, warped semidisplacement hull form, and Humphree interceptor and stabilizer system, the 54 cut through 2-footers with virtually zero effect. Paralleling other boat wakes and taking them on the beam produced a similar absence of any response.”

Grand Banks managed to blend long-range cruising with sporty performance, and a luxurious and accommodating interior on its GB54. The builder currently has a low-hour 2023 build listed for sale and is asking shy of $3.4 million.

Highpoint II is powered by twin 725 hp Volvo Penta D11 diesels, which come with extended warranties through April 2028 or 2,000 hours. With Grand Banks’ V-Warp hull technology, the GB54 cruises comfortably around 25 knots with a top speed of about 30 knots. At 10 knots, the yacht’s cruising range is approximately 1,000 nautical miles. Bow and stern thrusters, and the Humphree active-fin stabilization system enhance the ride and boathandling experience.

2005 Hinckley Yachts Talaria 40 – Elise – Portland, Maine

“The new [Hinckley] Talaria 40 is neither as sporty as her smaller sibling nor as soft on the senses as her larger sister. She fits nicely between the two, with accommodations that invite owners to spend more than a weekend aboard, even to prepare meals and sleep,” Yachting previously reported.

Worth Avenue Yachts has Elise, a Hinckley Yachts Talaria 40 that combines classic downeast lines with angling features, listed for sale with a $599,000 price tag. While the yacht was originally delivered in 2005, it was transformed in 2012 after naval architect Mathew Smith, engineers from Volvo Penta and Hank Hinckley replaced the standard jet propulsion system with the latest Volvo Penta IPS pod-drive propulsion system, resulting in a “groundbreaking and first-of-its-kind modification,” according to Worth Avenue Yachts.

The yacht has “enhanced tracking, superior turning ability, and a more efficient midrange cruise compared to traditional jet-powered counterparts,” says the broker, adding, “Elise goes a step further by offering dynamic positioning, allowing her to hold a specific GPS position at the touch of a button—an invaluable feature not only around docks but also during bridge wait times or while observing an upwind mark rounding in a sailing race.”

With the yacht’s previous owner being an avid fisherman, they added an array of features that enhance the fishing experience, including 27-foot Rupp removable outriggers, rod holders, a baitwell, a slightly modified cockpit, a removable rocket launcher and a livewell.

Belowdecks, owners and guests have access to the day head to port, the V-berth cabin forward and the galley to starboard. The galley is equipped with a Corian countertop, a two-burner Princess electric cooktop, a single-basin polished stainless-steel sink, a Sharp convection microwave oven, an Adler Barbour refrigerator/freezer and a U-Line ice maker.

“Sportiness is not a modifier often associated with Downeast-style express cruisers. But the new 46 Eastbay is powered by the Zeus propulsion system from Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, which changes the game as far as performance and handling are concerned,” Yachting previously reported

Grand Banks Yachts built, and is currently selling Defiance, a Grand Banks 46 Eastbay SX, for $829,000. The 2012 Downeast Cruiser features a two-stateroom, two-head layout. It’s powered by twin 600 hp Cummins QSC 8.3 diesels with Zeus pod drives, which give the 46 Eastbay SX a 31-knot top hop.

2008 Huckins 60 – Marina – Naples, Florida

“Her reverse transom masks an integral swim platform, which seems a practical compromise to tradition and accounts for her length overall (60 feet, 3 inches). Her styling has been refined: It’s a bit softer and has more curves than Frank Huckins might have liked. Such features were not efficient in wood construction. The gentle rise of her slightly reverse sheer, her proud chine, and the conservative rake of her stem are trademark Huckins,” Yachting previously reported

Allied Marine has a 2008 Huckins 60 for sale with a $995,000 asking price. Marina, a 60-foot motoryacht, has a two-stateroom layout, a new Glendinning Joystick control system and a 2-foot, 7-inch shoal draft.

The open, dance-floor-sized cockpit is a blank canvas for owners to equip to suit their entertainment needs, fishing and more.

A few steps up from the cockpit is the bridge deck, which has the helm forward and two three-person sofas flanking the lounge space aft. A fixed, high-gloss folding table between them turns the lounge area into a formal dining spot.

Stepping belowdecks, there is a salon and open galley with three hullside windows on either side bathing the space in natural light, creating the sense of interior volume. Galley appliances include:

 • Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer
 • Miele dishwasher
 • Miele oven
 • Kenyon two-burner ceramic stovetop
 • Granite countertops
 • Built-In storage for crystal, china and flatware

Abaft the lower-deck lounge area and down a few steps is the full-beam amidships master stateroom, which has a queen berth and an en suite his-and-hers head, separated by a shower stall. The forepeak guest stateroom has V-berths.

Marina has the same 715 hp Cummins QSM 11 diesels our test yacht had, which saw a 31-knot top hop and a 25-knot cruise.

Notable helm features on board Marina include:

 • Glendinning Pro Pilot Joystick control

“Riva’s SportRiva 56 is a dangerous yacht. It will blur your eyesight, disturb your emotions, mess with your mind. It is that older woman with the sultry eyes sitting alone at the bar. Atlantic Yacht & Ship Inc. has the 2012 Riva SportRiva, Gabriela, for sale with an $850,000 asking price. The chic 56-foot flybridge cruiser has such a low-profile sportbridge guests might first think they’re looking at an express cruiser.

Twin MAN V8-900 diesels give Gabriela a 34-knot top hop and a 30-knot cruise speed. Yachting previously reported that, “With her 15-degree transom deadrise, she had a soft ride in the choppy Gulf Stream off Florida, and she took just a touch of trim tabs to run flat and fast.”

Outside entertainment spaces on board Gabriela include a foredeck sun pad, two lounge pads on the flybridge and a diner-style booth in the cockpit.

In the salon, guests will find seating to port with a settee and fixed table adjacent to the helm station.

Looking for a rugged, dependable classic downeast yacht capable of cruising for extended periods of time? Ostinato, a 2005 Grand Banks 49 Eastbay HX, just entered the market at $555,000. Grand Banks’ 49 Eastbay HX is known for its performance, comfort and classic style with a seakindly ride in myriad weather conditions.

In 1993, Grand Banks launched the Eastbay series, a downeast cruiser, which is inspired by designs of classic Maine lobster/fishing vessels and turned into a modern cruising yacht. Built on a modified deep-V hull design by renowned naval architects at C. Raymond Hunt Associates, the Eastbay series offers a stable and steady ride across the performance spectrum. Grand Banks reported that the construction of the Eastbay series consists of hand-laid fiberglass laminated with special resins that resist blistering. The coring is vacuum-bagged into place to optimize strength and a system of heavy-duty fiberglass stringers are bonded to the hull for added strength and rigidity. A clear gelcoat is used on the hull below the waterline and three layers of epoxy barrier coat are on the hull bottom.

Ostinato‘s half-load displacement is around 48,000 pounds, but the original owners upgraded the engines to the optional twin 700 hp Caterpillar C12 Acert diesels, which can quickly push the yacht up to 32 knots at 2,300 rpm. Throttle back to 2,000 rpm and cruise comfortably at 26 knots, increasing range. The maximum range on Ostinato is reportedly 1,200 nautical miles at a 9-knot cruising speed. Ostinato‘s owners have continually updated the yacht, and below are some maintenance and upgrades associated on it Cat diesels:

 • New steering cooler on starboard engine
 • Removed turbochargers on both engines, blueprinted & reinstalled
 • Resealed Racor filter housings
 • New aftercooler check valves
 • New port raw-water pump inlet flange O-ring
 • New exhaust risers from Marine Exhaust systems
 • New starboard engine oil filter remote steel lines with hydraulic hose
 • New heat exchanger to transmission cooler hoses
 • New fiberglass adapter T’s (replaced stainless)
 • New starboard engine hoses to hot water heater tank
 • Installed raw-water feed to propeller shaft seal crossover hose and replaced shaft seal raw-water lines
 • New port oil pressure sensor
 • Installed new (2) EMS panel stickers at helm
 • New exhaust riser support bracket on starboard engine

Step aboard Ostinato‘s cockpit, which is accessible via a transom door from the full-beam teak swim platform. Eastbay HX series has a semi-enclosed helm open to the cockpit area with a teak sole running from the cockpit forward to the helm. Padded, aft-facing mezzanine seating allows guests to really enjoy the spacious cockpit area, which could be used for entertainment, fishing or sunbathing. Hatches on the deck lead to the engine room and a TNT hydraulic lift is available for a dinghy.

Enter the helm deck and take a seat to port on the L-shaped settee upholstered by A La Mer. The settee has stowage under the seats and a hi-lo table for dining. A 16,000 BTU A/C system keeps the helm deck cool. A heavy-gauge polycarbonate enclosure closes off the back of the helm deck from the cockpit and keeps the cool air inside. Forward of the L-shaped settee is a companion bench seat with a U-line ice maker underneath, footrest on the forward side and a locker for stowage. On the starboard side forward of the A/C unit, a few guests can be seated on a straight settee, which is located abaft the helm. Two skylight hatches over the helm along with side windows and a center windshield can be opened for added ventilation throughout the helm deck.

The helm is forward of the straight settee on the starboard side. Three large windows forward, along with large side windows, gives the helmsman a nearly 360-degree view. A Garmin electronics package includes two 16-inch Garmin 7616XSVs w/GPS, chart plotter, autopilot w/Shadow Drive, GMR624XHD radar, bronze transducer, SM Satellite Weather and AIS 600 Class B Transceiver.

Grand Banks 49 HX
The U-shaped galley is down with sizable counter space for meal prep. Courtesy Grand Banks

The galley is located on the lower deck, which is down a few steps forward of the helm, on the port side and is adjacent to a dining/lounge area. The galley is equipped with overhead cabinetry, glass and bottle holders, four drawers for stowage, trash bin and a stowage locker. Facing aft are four refrigerator drawers, upper locker with Sharp convection-microwave and an additional stowage locker. Corian countertops with a stainless-steel sink cover the lower teak cabinets and Princess electric range/oven with ceramic cooktop.

Forward of the galley and dining area is the owners’ stateroom with a teak interior and teak-and-holly sole, which is found throughout the yacht. Owners can relax on a centerline queen-sized berth. There are cedar-lined hanging lockers on the starboard side, and stowage drawers on the port side with opening lockers beneath. Under the berth are two additional drawers and the top of the berth hinges upward with a large stowage space underneath, creating plenty of space for extended cruising. Owners also have access to the en suite head with a shower. The guest stateroom is amidships on the port side with twin berths, a hanging locker and additional drawer stowage under the berths with two drawers forward. The guest head is located on the starboard side across from the guest stateroom.

Grand Banks 36 Classic

Lyman-Morse has listed the Grand Banks 36 Classic Caroline for sale, with an asking price of $75,000.

The Grand Banks 36 has long been a favorite model for couples who are interested in long-distance cruising. Since 1965, more than 1,130 of the Grand Banks 36 hulls have been built. Early hulls were constructed in wood, with the builder then switching to fiberglass as it became more popular. The GB36 also set the stage for the GB42, which saw more than 1,500 hulls come off the production line.

Caroline is a 1980 version of the GB36 Classic with a fiberglass hull. According to the team at Lyman-Morse, this yacht has been professionally maintained and stored indoors during the winter. The current owner is going back to a sailboat and looking for someone who will love Caroline as much as he and his family did.

Key specs aboard Caroline include a 12-foot-8-inch beam and a draft of 4 feet, allowing the yacht to access most shallow-draft destinations. Fuel capacity is 400 gallons, and Caroline carries 140 gallons of water.

This is a single-engine yacht with a 135 hp Lehman that reportedly pushes the hull to a top speed of 8.5 knots and a cruising speed of 7 knots.

The trawler has a two-stateroom layout and is equipped for extended cruising. It could be a solid fit for Great Loop enthusiasts. Courtesy Lyman-Morse

That speed, paired with fuel efficiency, is among the characteristics that have made the Grand Banks 36 such a popular option for long-distance cruisers. Quite a few owners still spend weeks or months aboard at a time, while others are liveaboards.

The GB36 Classic layout includes a V-berth stateroom forward with a head, and an owners’ stateroom aft, also with a head. The galley, lower helm station, salon and dining space are in between the two staterooms, giving owners and their guests (or their kids) privacy during evenings at anchor.

Caroline sports a traditional white paint scheme with varnished teak accents and a red-and-green boot stripe. The yacht has Bimini tops for shade aft and on the upper deck, with a tender lift at the stern to make dinghy operations easier.

The boat is expected to be fully commissioned and ready to cruise the coast of Maine, or wherever else the new owners may want to take her, as of this spring. Caroline is currently located in Blue Hill, Maine, near Bar Harbor.

What is there to see in and around Bar Harbor, Maine? According to the Cruising Club of America, “a gazillion shops, restaurants, great provisioning, and the iconic Acadia National Park.” There are municipal moorings in the main harbor, as well as an anchorage and a dinghy dock.

When it’s time to turn in for the night, the two-stateroom setup includes a forward master stateroom with the guest stateroom to port. The forepeak master has a queen island berth, extended-cruising stowage space, a nightstand, a portlight and en suite head. The guest stateroom has twin athwartships berths. It’s worth noting the dinette converts into an additional berth for occasional guests.

Uncharted is a 2007 Grand Banks 47 Eastbay Flybridge with just 985 hours on its Cat diesels. Asking price: $749,000. Courtesy Wellington Yacht Partners

Wellington Yacht Partners currently has Uncharted, a GrandBanks 47 East Bay Flybridge, listed for $749,000. The 2007 Downeast-style flybridge yacht has a two-stateroom, two-head layout. A straight and stately sheerline and trunk cabin help to form the yacht’s timeless profile.

Sole-to-ceiling satin-finished teak, light tones and natural lighting give this 47-footer’s salon a warm, inviting atmosphere. Guests will find seating on both sides of the salon with two club chairs to starboard, separated by an entertainment center with a retractable flat-screen TV, and a three-person, L-shaped sofa with a folding coffee table to port. The lower helm station is to starboard with side-deck access via a door next to it, a great setup for shorthanded cruising. There is bench seating for companions to port.

Forward and down a few steps is the Grand Banks Eastbay 47 Flybridge’s galley, two staterooms and two heads. The galley is immediately to port with a U-shaped countertop, a convection oven/microwave, a sink, stowage, a cooktop and a top-loading refrigerator and freezer. Forward of the galley is the second head, which doubles as a day head. The forepeak owners’ stateroom has a centerline berth and an en suite head. The starboard guest stateroom has twin berths.

When it comes to outside space, the teak cockpit is a blank slate. Owners can add some loose chairs for sundowners with friends, or put a few rods in the rod holders and let the kids catch dinner. Then again, why choose?

Spiral stairs lead to the flybridge where there is an L-shaped sofa and fixed table set abaft the two-seat upper helm station. The flybridge can become an all-weather space by zipping shut its brand-new polycarbonate enclosure.

Twin 700 hp Caterpillar C12 diesels provide power for Uncharted giving it a reported 32-knot top hop. Yachting ’s original test of the Grand Banks 47 Eastbay Flybridge had the same engines and we reported, “The 47FB consumed just two gallons per mile, whether we were doing 14 knots or 25 knots, which gives a skipper some good choices.”

It’s worth noting that Uncharted‘s engines have just 985 hours on them.

“So, it was a surprise in the mid-1990s when Grand Banks broke the traditional mold and introduced a series of New England-style express cruisers. To the marine world, it couldn’t have been more shocking if Rolls Royce had started building pickups or Moet & Chandon offered a diet cola.

Labeling them as Eastbay yachts originally was a good idea, separating the brands, but the company is now bringing them back into the fold as the Eastbay Series by Grand Banks. That’s an equally good idea at this point, because it helps underline some of the differences between the two lines while still emphasizing the heritage and quality of Grand Banks.” – Yachting, 2007

Top 15 Trawlers for 2023 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/top-trawlers/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 19:00:31 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=61081 Our experts review 15 of the top trawler and trawler-style yachts, from owner-operator-size bluewater-cruising platforms to globe-girdling supersized explorer yachts that can cross oceans to far-flung waypoints.

The post Top 15 Trawlers for 2023 appeared first on Yachting.

]]>
For every shoe, there’s a foot, and for every boating enthusiast, there’s a yacht. For those individuals who like to cruise their yachts across blue water, spend months on board or voyage to remote beaches and quiet coves, a trawler yacht is the go-to vessel choice. But even within this yacht genre, there are many options. For example, there are some mighty midsize trawlers that are easily capable of transatlantic crossings for an adventurous couple, and then there are megayacht-size craft with next-level amenities that require extra crew. Some trawler-yacht builders offer significant customization and others work from a fixed options list. There are single-engine trawlers and twin-engine trawlers. One thing that is common is that these trawler yachts are designed from the ground up for yachtsmen with wanderlust in their hearts.

Top Trawlers

The following 15 trawlers are all vessels we’ve written about. They are listed in no particular order.

Nordhavn 96

The Nordhavn 96 is the yacht builder’s second-largest yacht its 17-model fleet, which ranges from 41 to 120 feet length overall. (There is a new 112 on the drawing table.) The builder says the N96 is based on its earlier 86-footer with a 10-foot cockpit extension, which increases both main-deck, skylounge and below-deck volume. The N96 we reviewed was built by an owner who previously had an 86-foot Nordhavn, but with his plans for extended cruises to remote destinations, the 96 was the right size for his voyaging plans. In fact, since the owner took delivery of the boat, it has been on a continuous circumnavigation.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Beneteau’s Grand Trawler 62 has 1,000-plus-mile range and 20-knot speed with twin 730 hp i6 MAN diesels. The Grand Trawler 62 is the builder’s flagship in its Trawler series, which also includes the Swift Trawler 35, Swift Trawler 41 SedanSwift Trawler 41 Fly and Swift Trawler 48. Small touches set the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 apart. They include sea rails on all lockers to keep stowed food and gear in place, leather-wrapped interior handrails for security in a seaway, and leather drawer pulls like those found on larger yachts. Long-range cruising accommodations include a full-beam master stateroom aft, a forepeak VIP and twin-berth guest stateroom. A Quick X3 gyrostabilizer helps mitigate any potential rocking and rolling on rough days.

Kadey-Krogen 52

The Kadey-Krogen 52 is the trawler-yacht builder’s smallest offering in its raised-pilothouse series, complete with a Portuguese Bridge. Owners can choose from either a two- or three-stateroom layout, and between a single-diesel engine or twin-diesel engines, for owners seeking redundancy. The standard engine is a 231 hp John Deere diesel. With the single-engine setup, draft is 5’5” and with twins it’s a shallower 4’6”. At 6 knots, range is an ocean-crossing 4,850 nautical miles. At 7 knots, it’s 3,300 nm. At 9 knots, it 1,700 nm. The builder states, “The entire Krogen 52 is built from only three molded pieces for maximized structural integrity. There are no additional secondary bonds or caulk joints that can inevitably cause issues. All deck and superstructures are cored and vacuum-bagged to maximize strength while minimizing weight.” Additionally, six longitudinal stringers enhance overall strength.

Bering Yachts B76

Lemanja is the first custom boat that Bering has built in this size range. The yacht is notable for its steel hull and aluminum superstructure, and for its 4,000-nautical-mile-plus range with its twin 404 hp Cummins QSL9 diesel engines. As rugged as the Bering 76 is built on the outside, it also offers homelike comforts in its skylounge inside, offering panoramic views out large windows surrounding the space. Sole-to-ceiling glass offers similar views in the open-plan salon. Accommodations are fox six guests in three staterooms with a master stateroom and two guest staterooms, plus crew accommodations. In addition to its traditional diesel engines, the B76 has a solar-rechargeable battery bank for hybrid propulsion.

Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge

The Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge is a long-distance cruiser with creature comforts. Our expert found the R-43 Command Bridge to be a solid candidate to cruise The Great Loop. We agree. Twin Volvo Penta IPS450 pod drives give the boat efficient low and high cruise speeds at 7 and 18 knots, respectively. For those that have work during their cruise, the R-43 Command bridge’s master stateroom is set up with an office with a desk. Long trips require extra stowage and a way to clean salty clothes, so on the R-43 Command Bridge there is a washer, dryer, auxiliary refrigerator/freezer and stowage under the dinette, which rises on electric rams. Voyagers who buy a R-43 Commander Bridge can opt for a Factory Delivery Experience, which is three days of instruction on Puget Sound, and includes in boat systems, handling and maintenance.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 48

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 48 has a 1,300-nautical-mile range at 8 knots, but can also speed away at 26 knots if the weather goes south in a hurry. Based on the builder’s 47-footer, the three-stateroom, two-head Swift Trawler 48 has a resin-infused fiberglass hull. Power is a pair of 425 hp Cummins diesels. The main-deck layout includes a galley aft setup, which is accessible to the cockpit. There, the seating and dining area can be fully enclosed, with tracks in place for side curtains. The helmsman is kept comfortable on long passages with a bolstered, pedestal bucket-style seat with a flip-up footrest. The Swift Trawler 48 we reviewed had upgraded 12-inch Raymarine HybridTouch displays (9-inch screens are standard).

Kadey-Krogen 50 Open

Designed for serious extended cruising, Kadey-Krogen Yachts 50 Open provides owners with amenities that will enhance those longer passages. The galley is fitted with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, a four-burner Wolf range, a microwave and an optional dishwasher. Unlike in many trawlers and their traditional pilothouse design, the galley is located on the same level as the helm and salon. Belowdecks is the master stateroom amidships with two hanging lockers, 12 cabinets, additional drawers for stowage and an en suite head, shower and two sinks. Forward of the master is an office. The 50 Open’s hull has soft chines and a curved after end, much like the characteristics of a sailboat built for cruising. The result is an efficient hull form that provides a gentle landing into troughs when the sea gets a temper. This trawler can cruise at 6 knots for 5,000 nautical miles; 7 knots for 3,000 nautical miles; 8 knots for 2,100 nautical miles; and 9 knots for 1,200 nautical miles.

Outer Reef 620 Trident

Outer Reef Yachts 620 Trident delivers a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels that allow this vessel to approach a top hop of 21 knots. Cruising speed is a little over 16 knots, burning about 34 gallons of fuel per hour at 2,750 rpm. The amidships master stateroom has 6-foot-8-inch headroom, a walk-in closet and a shower enclosed in smoked glass. In the forepeak VIP stateroom, there are seven drawers, a hanging locker, a 31-inch Samsung TV and 7-foot headroom. The portside guest stateroom can convert to an office, too. The aft galley has a U-shape countertop, a three-burner electric cooktop, a Bosch microwave and a Vitrifrigo refrigerator and freezer. Cherry, walnut and oak are the available wood options.

Grand Banks 60 Skylounge

It’s obvious after a quick peek inside the Grand Banks 60 Skylounge that the Grand Banks Yachts trademark external DNA is retained. The deck, cabin house and skylounge are all composed of infused carbon fiber, reducing weight aloft and creating a lower center of gravity. With twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels, the 60 Skylounge can accelerate to 31 knots and cruise at about 25 knots. The 60 Skylounge can also travel up to 2,000 nautical miles at 10 knots on a 1,530-gallon fuel tank. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200s are also available.

In the interior, Krogen Express has outfitted the 52 with a master stateroom and a guest stateroom. The former has a queen island berth, more than 7-foot headroom, hanging lockers and smaller cubbies to port and to starboard, and an en suite head with a molded fiberglass shower stall with a seat, a VacuFlush toilet and a granite countertop. A power lift elevates the berth and grants access to more stowage underneath. The Krogen Express 52’s salon has a 26-inch HD LED TV and a home-theater system, leather Stressless chairs to port and a built-in, L-shape settee to starboard. The galley boasts granite countertops, a three-burner Force 10 propane range with an oven, a refrigerator, a GE microwave oven, a deep Elkay sink and a pullout sprayer faucet. Grand Banks 85 Skylounge

The Grand Banks 85 Skylounge comes in at more than 87 feet length overall and displaces 108,000 pounds, with a 22-plus-foot beam and an air draft of just under 26 feet. Owners can choose either a three- or four-stateroom layout. The standard motors are twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS diesels, twin 1,300 hp MAN straight-shaft diesels are optional. With the larger engines, owners can also choose an optional stern thruster, in addition to the standard bow thruster. With the IPS diesels, top speed is 26.5 knots and fuel burn is 100 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of 699 nautical miles. At a 21-knot cruise speed, fuel consumption drops to 57 gph, and range climbs to 972 nm. At a 9-knot jog, fuel burn falls to 9 gph, and the Grand Banks 85 Skylounge can cruise nonstop for about 2,500 nautical miles.

Vicem 82 Classic Flybridge

The Vicem 82 Classic is a flybridge model built in cold-molded mahogany, which creates a stout hull form with reduced weight. The yacht is notable for its timeless Downeast lines and strong joiner work. For cruising enthusiasts, the Classic 82 Flybridge is powered with twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels. The yacht has a top-end speed of 17.8 knots, and the cruising speed is 15 knots. At 9 knots, and considering a 10-percent fuel reserve, range is reportedly 1,100 nautical miles.  Accommodations three en-suite-equipped staterooms. The master stateroom is full-beam and amidships with a king-size berth is on centerline. The starboard-side guest stateroom and a forepeak VIP each have queen-size berths.

Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht

Built for an enthusiastic cruising couple after a three-year boat search, the Outer Reef Yachts 610 Motoryacht (part of the builder’s Classic series), was customized with a fore-and-aft berth in the owners’ stateroom (as in, not athwartships), and berths rather than bunks in the smaller of two guest staterooms. This Outer Reef 610 was designed to be used as a liveaboard vessel, so the salon is not set up for dining (there are tables in the pilothouse, on the aft deck and on the bridge). A pair of swivel chairs in the salon face the built-in couch and the pop-up TV to port. The 610 is built with hand-laid fiberglass, PVC coring above the waterline, resin infusion and a vinylester barrier coat against osmosis. Power is twin 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels turning ZF transmissions. The 610 tops out at about 13.5 knots with full tanks and 21 people aboard. The engines burn 20 gph at 1,800 rpm for 11 knots at 45 percent engine load. Those numbers should allow it to cross oceans without shortening engine life.

Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot

Nordhavn has long been known for its stout circumnavigation-capable craft, and the Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot carries on the the tradition of a beefy build with addition of…speed. Twenty-knots-plus, actually. Twin 715 hp Cummins diesel inboards and a new semidisplacement hull form are said to be key to the performance equation. The Nordhavn 59CP has a 777-nautical-mile range at a 9.3-knot cruise, and a 255-nm range at its 20.3-knot top-end. Construction is a solid fiberglass hull bottom supported by full-length longitudinal stringers and a series of transversal supports for added backbone. High freeboard should keep the decks dry in a seaway, while rails keep the crew secure during transits. Nordhavn says the 59CP has a “CE category A unlimited offshore rating, ensuring the vessel has the seakeeping and strength capabilities to take on most serious coastal cruises up to 1,000 miles.”

Marlow Yachts 58E

Following on the successful Marlow 57, the Marlow 58E was started from scratch on a blank sheet of paper. The essence of the 58E is that it has better performance and more internal and external volume than her predecessor. The centerline length grew 10 inches over the 57, but the waterline length increased 16 inches and the beam widened 4 inches. If you were to examine the two boats out of the water, you would see more bell-shaped forward sections making for a soft impact with the vee’d portion. Power options start with twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels, but the 58E we got aboard had beefier twin 1,015 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels. Top speed: 27.9 knots. At 8 knots, the Marlow 58E can cruise nonstop for 1,400 nautical miles.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a trawler yacht?

A true trawler typically has a full-displacement hull form and robust construction to handle open-water operation, and it’s designed to operate self-sufficiently for long periods of time. They are slow-cruising vessels, but over the years, hybrid yachts called fast trawlers have emerged to offer displacement-speed operation as well as the ability to run at planing speeds when desired.

What is a full-displacement hull form?

A displacement-hull form is known is for its rounded nature and deep draft. Full-displacement vessels do not plane on the water, but rather push through the water. This hull design makes displacement-hull vessels incredibly seakindly, but it also makes them relatively slow (think 5, 6, 7, 8 knots) when compared to semidisplacement- and planning-hull designs.

Is a long-range cruiser the same as a trawler?

While all trawlers are certainly long-range cruisers, not all long-range cruisers are trawlers. True trawlers will have full-displacement hull designs and not all long-range cruisers have them.
