Looking for a midsize Downeast yacht that’s Great Loop ready and family-cruise friendly? Simpatico, a 2013 Sabre 48 Salon Express Yacht has two staterooms, plus a cabin, accommodating up to five guests. Simpatico is on the market with Grand Banks for $725,000.

“Sabre is one of the masters of building classically inspired DownEast designs that incorporate modern styling details. Combined as a whole package, these details create a timeless, elegant, yet contemporary design. The proportions of the 48 work perfectly, in my opinion. The tumblehome of the transom flows seamlessly into a deck with moderate shear, which benefits from a cabin house design that is absent of any harsh 90-degree angles,” Yachting previously reported.

Powered by twin 550 hp Cummins 8.3L diesel engines paired toCMD Zeus 3800 pod drives with integrated steering and trim, Simpatico reaches a top speed just over 32 knots, but dial it back to a 27-knot cruise speed for a range around 315 nautical miles.

When reviewing a previous Sabre 48 Salon Express, Yachting explained that “Zeus is the azipod drive system developed by ZF and Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, and Skyhook is the wonderful feature that allowed us to hold station. The magic comes from the built-in GPS that communicates with the computer governing Zeus’s behavior to hold the boat captive within its coordinates-give or take a few feet. No less thrilling is the way these pods enhance the 48’s maneuverability, at planing speed and in tight quarters, when the speeds are so slow that conventional rudders become useless. Although this system lacks the feel of a traditional cable-operated system, it is quick and positive, even in reverse. In the docking mode, Zeus’s joystick lets you move the boat forward, backward, and sideways.”

Owners get this island berth in their stateroom as well as an en suite head. There’s also enough stowage for extended cruising. Courtesy Grand Banks Marine

Owners can easily board Simpatico from the swim platform and via the portside transom door. Relax in the cockpit’s forward-facing, L-shaped settee with folding table to starboard or on the aft-facing bench-style cushioned settee. Want to enhance your tan? Layout on the foredeck and enjoy a little alone time. Stainless-steel handrails and non-slip fiberglass soles are a few safety features provided to keep guests comfortable while cruising. For those who seek a little more adventure, Simpatico has an upgraded Freedom lift that secures a 11’4″ Boston Whaler tender that can shuttle guests to a private beach for lunch while the kids swim.

Simpatico’s pilot house is covered by a fiberglass hardtop with large windows on each side allowing natural light to illuminate the area. An open-air environment can be created when opening up the door and windows to the cockpit area, or keep it enclosed and take advantage of the A/C or heating system. Two Stidd leather captain’s chairs sit at the helm with an L-shaped settee adjacent on the port side, allowing guests to join the captain while cruising. Abaft the helm station in the salon is an L-shaped dinette with a folding table  to starboard with a bench-style settee that adjusts forward to complete the dinette to port. Guests have the option to enjoy a meal inside the salon, or have an alfresco dinner in the cockpit.

Simpatico has the following electronics and navigation systems:

  • Cummins DTS single-lever electronic controls
  • Cummins SmartCraft display (engine data, tank levels, vessel data, alarms)
  • Twin touchscreen Raymarine Axiom pro units
  • Raymarine Magnum wide-array radar
  • Triple windshield with wipers and washers
  • Ritchie Compass
  • Stazo 400mm custom teak steering wheel with tilt helm and Sabre logo
  • CMD helm with joystick
  • Trim tabs integrated in CMD Zeus pod drives
  • Autopilot integrated in CMD Zeus system
  • Skyhook GPS position hold system with dedicated GPS receiver

Down five wooden stairs from the helm station is Simpatico’s galley. The varnished cherry interior is complemented with a stainless-steel, stand-up refrigerator/freezer, stainless-steel convection microwave, solid-surface countertop, two-burner electric cooktop and a stainless-steel under-mount sink with cover and pull-out faucet. Cold goods can be stowed in the refrigerator/freezer while dry goods and galley accessories can be stowed in drawers and stowage lockers below the counter.

After a long day on the water, owners can retire to one of two staterooms located forward of the galley. The master stateroom has an island berth with an en suite head. The wood grains from the teak-and-holly sole up to the cherrywood ceilings glow and are offset by light-colored fabrics. Stow your personal belongings in drawers beneath the berth, drawers in the bulkhead abaft the berth and two hanging lockers. The VIP stateroom has a centerline island berth wth an en suite head. Guests can stow their personal belongings in drawers, drawers under the berth, stowage lockers and shelves. An additional crew cabin is available with a full-sized berth that could be used for extra stowage space, or maybe a room for a teenager seeking a little privacy.

Grand Banks stated, “Simpatico is a beautiful example of the popular 48 Sabre Salon Express. From 2013 to 2020, Simpatico was kept exclusively in freshwater (the Great Lakes) and stored indoors for six months of the year. In 2020, the boat came to Florida with her second owner and was only used from November to March each year, then stored inside a climate-controlled facility for the rest of the time. Having been kept on a stringent maintenance regimen and only exposed to the environment for half her life, Simpatico shows much newer than her age.”

Where is Simpatico located? The yacht is currently lying in Stuart, Florida.

Sabre 43 Salon Express
The Sabre 43 Salon Express has a stately profile, but it also has a sporty side. We saw a nearly 35-knot top hop. Alison Langley

The Florida-based couple explained to me that they were winding down from their full-time work lives. They had plans to spend more time cruising, but not down South. They have a part-time home in the Pine Tree State, but would soon leave their Sunshine State residence behind for a full-time life in New England. The move would come with liveaboard and serious voyaging plans, and the Sabre Yachts 43 Salon Express we were aboard was on their shortlist because their current outboard-powered vessel lacks the layout and amenities for a true cruising campaign.

I was sitting at the salon’s L-shaped dinette to starboard, with a standard high-gloss cherry-wood high-low table and pillow-soft seating. The couple kicked back on the straight settee to port as they told me their story. Looking around this space, the why of their choice came into focus.

Sabre 43 Salon Express
The Sabre 43 Salon Express has a proper helm setup in that there are standard—and quite comfortable—Stidd seats with fold-down footrests. Alison Langley

First, there’s the cozy like home factor we were experiencing. The 43’s salon has a warm, welcoming, standard teak-and-holly sole, enhanced by equally warm, welcoming, grain-matched, satin-finish cherry wood—also standard. This wood combination is found throughout the yacht’s interior. It’s easy to envision an early morning sitting at the dinette, feet up with hot coffee made at the open galley just a couple of steps down from the salon. Maybe watch the 32-inch flip-down TV as the vessel’s optional 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS10-650 diesels warm up for the day’s adventure. (The 380 hp IPS-500s are standard.)

The galley is to port and down, barely, and it is bright and airy. Three front windows are gently raked, creating an atrium effect over the L-shaped galley, which also benefits from the side windows amping up the natural-light quotient. The salon has curved glass wrapping around its after section, providing views of the cockpit corners, as opposed to a squared-off bulkhead that forces the skipper to move their head to catch the view aft. This curved glass is a clever bit of engineering and manufacturing, and not something I’ve seen on a yacht of this size.

Sabre 43 Salon Express
The 43’s modified-V hull form creates a stable running surface that gets on plane quickly and effortlessly. Alison Langley

The galley is also well-equipped for meal prep with a solid-surface countertop, stainless-steel undermount sink, Cuisinart convection/microwave oven, two-burner Kenyon induction cooktop, and Vitrifrigo two-drawer fridge and freezer. Induction cooktops use around 5 percent to 10 percent less energy than their electric counterparts, and they are generally safer because the surface only gets hot once pots or pans are placed on the burners. (Induction cooktops generate heat via an electromagnetic field.)

In addition to taking meals in the salon, owners can sit at a U-shaped dinette across from the galley that Sabre calls the hybrid lounge. The seating and table convert to a double berth with a 6-inch foam mattress for the kids or occasional guests.

Sabre 43 Salon Express
From the high-gloss cherry-wood table to the satin-finish teak-and-holly sole, the 43’s woodwork is first-rate. Alison Langley

Owners take their slumber in the master stateroom forward. This stateroom has an island berth with a 9-inch latex mattress, which generally means durability and supports the body better than memory foam, a positive attribute when the plan is extended voyages and being a seasonal—or longer—liveaboard. The owner’s stateroom also has a Samsung flat-screen TV, four drawers to port, and a cedar-lined locker to starboard to stow clothes and gear.

There is a single head on board the 43, and the master stateroom has direct access to it. There is additional guest access off the companionway. The head has a Tecma toilet and a separate stall shower with an acrylic door. There is a sink here, along with solid-surface countertops and a deck hatch above for fresh air ventilation.

Sabre 43 Salon Express

The Sabre 43 Salon Express surely felt the part of ready-to-run cruiser as I looked around, but the question remained: Does this well-proportioned and nicely outfitted downeast design, with its timeless lines and modern powerplants, have the performance to match?

Running in calm water with seven people aboard and about two-thirds of the 432-gallon fuel tank full, the boat came on plane in rapid fashion. It soon hit an effortless 30-knot cruise speed at 3,300 rpm while the engines burned right around 37 gallons of fuel per hour. Considering a 10 percent reserve, there is about a 315-nautical-mile range at this speed. Push those single-lever throttles on the pins at 3,700 rpm, and this 43-footer makes about 35 knots while burning 49 gph, resulting in a range of about 278 nautical miles. That’s solid performance for a yacht with a 30,800-pound half-load displacement.

Sabre 43 Salon Express
Note the curved windows in the after section of the house. A hydraulic swim platform is optional. Alison Langley

The efficiency is partly thanks to the IPS propulsion package, but it’s also because that package works in lockstep with the 43’s modified-V hull form, which has 15 degrees of transom deadrise and 21 degrees amidships. It creates an easy-to-plane and stable running surface.

Supporting this hull form is robust construction, with the yacht’s hull bottom and topsides built via resin-infused biaxial E-glass with Corecell foam for strength without added weight. The stringer system is also built with E-glass and a foam core for a strong backbone.

In addition to build strength, the 43 has a yacht-quality level of fit-and-finish at all points, from the joinerwork to the see-your-face-in-it hull paint. The designers also optimized onboard real estate in every way I could see.

As I write this, I don’t know if the couple I met ultimately ordered the Sabre 43 Salon Express. But as I was leaving the boat, I saw them sitting comfortably in the salon, taking in the layout and seeming to be in no hurry to disembark. That’s always a good sign.

Helm It Your Way

The Sabre 43 Salon Express has a proper helm setup in that there are standard—and quite comfortable—Stidd seats with fold-down footrests. Sightlines are unobstructed, even when the boat is coming onto plane. The single-lever throttles and joystick are positioned within arm’s reach, multifunction displays are in the line of sight, and there is side-deck access for line handling when cruising shorthanded.

Assisted Docking

This 43 Salon Express is equipped with Volvo Penta’s Assisted Docking system. It let our captain create a perimeter or lane for the yacht. Push the joystick forward, and the boat moves forward in the preset lane. Create a perimeter, and the boat moves within the circle. Not sure what to do? Let the joystick go, and the yacht holds position. The system worked smoothly and came in handy while waiting for bridges.

The Great Outdoors

Cruising is the primary mission of the Sabre 43 Salon Express, and part of the cruising experience is entertaining friends and family. The cockpit is well-suited for the task. Entrance is gained via a transom door off the swim platform to starboard. There is an L-shaped settee to port, set around a high-gloss wood table for alfresco meals. Flanking the sliding glass doors on centerline are two aft-facing seats for taking in the view underway.

The owners make sure the varnish is taken care of every 6-8 months, and her elegant blue flag hull gets buffed and waxed once a year. Her engines/pods and generator have all been 1,000-hour serviced. “The Sabre 42 Express Hard Top rides on a modified V-hull, which ends in a deadrise of 16 degrees at the transom. The bottom is steep and fine forward, splitting waves into kindling and easing the way for the shallower after sections. Lifting strakes and chine flats add lift, and the latter enhance the boat’s stability when she’s at rest or at displacement speed,” as previously reported in Yachting.

Excalibur is powered by twin Cummins diesel engines, combined 850 horsepower, with Zeus pod drives and joystick system. When reviewing the Sabre 42 Hard Top Express, Yachting explained that Zeus is the azipod drive system developed by ZF and Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, and Skyhook is the wonderful feature that allows the boat to hold station. The magic comes from the built-in GPS that communicates with the computer governing Zeus’s behavior to hold the boat captive within its coordinates-give or take a few feet. No less thrilling is the way these pods enhance the 42’s maneuverability, at planing speed and in tight quarters, when the speeds are so slow that conventional rudders become useless. Although this system lacks the feel of a traditional cable-operated system, it is quick and positive, even in reverse. In docking mode, Zeus’s joystick lets you move the boat forward, backward, and sideways. The 42 Hard Top Express has a top speed of 34 knots.

Owners can easily board Excalibur from the swim platform and via the transom door. Two aft-facing cushioned benches, one to port and one to starboard, and a fold-down bench on the transom provide plenty of room for guests who enjoy relaxing in the sun. Three molded-in stairs on each side of the cockpit give access to the foredeck where a few guests could also sunbathe. Stainless-steel handrails and non-slip fiberglass soles are a few safety features provided to keep guests comfortable while cruising.

Excalibur’s pilothouse is covered by a fiberglass hardtop with large windows on each side allowing natural light to illuminate the area. An open-air environment can be created when opening up the door and windows to the cockpit area, or keep it closed while using the new A/C or heating system. Two Stidd-style leather captain’s chairs are at the helm and there’s an L-shaped settee with table just aft on the port side. There are new twin touchscreen Raymarine Axiom pro units and new Raymarine Magnum wide-array radar. Down four steps from the bridge deck is Excalibur’s salon and galley. The single-cabin layout allows for a larger full-beam U-shaped galley and salon with a C-shaped dinette and table that seats five. Varnished American cherry wood and the teak-and-holly sole glow from the natural light that flows in from the portholes. A U-shaped galley with a large sink provides plenty of counter space for food prep and the electric stovetop, oven and microwave allow the owners to prepare just about any type of meal. Twin 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650’s will quickly push the Marola, a 2020 Sabre 45’ Salon Express Yacht, to a max speed of almost 31 knots if you are trying to beat the weather or make that dinner reservation, but most of the time a leisurely 23.5-knot cruise speed is the way to go. The yacht’s modified-V hull form—with a 23-degree deadrise amidships and a 16-degree transom deadrise—flattened the bumps in a head sea and held steady in a beam sea, even when cranked to a wide-open throttle speed of 30.9 knots, as previously reported in Yachting.

The layout of the Marola consists of two staterooms with two full heads, a salon with a mid-galley, forward helm, and an aft deck with a U-shaped settee. The aft deck also has a Freedom tender lift, which holds its 2021 model AB 10-foot-6-inch tender with a 15 hp outboard motor.

The aft deck is where the cool kids should be riding on Marola. A U-shaped settee with a table should comfortably seat six guests in the open, out-on-the-water atmosphere. Pull out the retractable awning to help break up the sunshine, if the sun gets toasty. Lunch Time? Fire up the electric grill and cook a few hamburgers for guests as the captain readies the tender for a trip to a private beach.

Step through a glass door into the salon area where you will find yourself surrounded by windows on all sides, allowing natural light to flow freely through the salon, galley and helm spaces. Take a seat on the portside straight settee or the starboard side L-shaped settee behind a teak table with flip-down leaves. Stowage drawers can be found under both settees, and additional stowage space is available under the Stidd seats at the helm. Down a couple of steps into the half-galley, owners can easily entertain their guests using the following amenities:

  • Kenyon Silken 2 induction stove
  • Microwave/convection oven
  • Isotherm refrigerator
  • Vitrifrigo freezer
  • Corian countertop in “Sand Storm”
  • Sink w/Corian cover

Forward of the salon, is the helm with twin Ultraleather “Sea Horse” Stidd seats and footrests to keep the captain and a guest comfortable underway. Large windscreens and side windows give the captain an unobstructed view of the surrounding scene, and a side door gives the captain access to the starboard side deck when short-handed cruising. Invite additional guests up to the helm to be seated in the U-shaped cockpit/helm settee to help keep the captain entertained while piloting the vessel. The captain has access to the following electronics to keep the Marola safe and pointed in the proper direction:

  • 2/Garmin 8607 Screens, GPS, radar, sounder
  • Seakeeper display
  • FLIR, optional upgrade
  • ACR Searchlight, mounted on optional hardtop mast
  • Kahlenberg dual horns, chrome
  • GPS antenna (2)

As the evening out on the water comes to an end, the Marola has two staterooms, the master stateroom and guest stateroom, allowing owners and guests to rest peacefully during the night. The master stateroom has an island queen berth with two reading lights and a Samsung LCD TV. Plenty of stowage is available in the drawers beneath the queen berth, in drawers on both the port and starboard sides, and in a hanging locker. The guest stateroom has twin berths that convert to a double berth with reading lights and a Samsung LCD TV.

Additional Upgrades:

  • Clearline Electrosea Smart Marine AC Strainer System
  • Seakeeper 6 Gyrostabilizer
  • FLIR Night Vision camera
  • KVH3 Satellite TV with DVR receiver

The Sabre 42 Salon Express called Osprey is listed with Maritimo Americas and has a $498,000 asking price. The 2011 Downeast-style express cruiser has timeless lines and has a solid layout for cruising couples.

The Sabre 42 Salon Express rides on a modified V-hull form, which has a fine entry that transitions to 16 degrees of transom deadrise, creating a stable platform on the water. Power for this 40-footer is provided by twin Cummins QSB5.9 380 diesels, which combine with the Zeus azipod drive system, a combination Yachting previously described as “transforming a lovely New England-style boat into a surprisingly economical hot rod.” This 42 Salon Express has a reported cruise speed of 25 knots.

“The bottom is steep and fine forward, splitting waves into kindling and easing the way for the shallower after sections. Lifting strakes and chine flats add lift, and the latter enhance the boat’s stability when she’s at rest or at displacement speed,” Yachting previously reported. “Nothing special here, just sound design, so I wasn’t prepared for her handling prowess. The 42 accelerated briskly-not like a muscle boat, but quickly enough-and sprinted to a top speed of 34 knots. I turned sharply left and right, and then put the Express into a 360-degree turn at full throttle. The G-load surprised me, as the boat banked into the turn and carved a tight circle, losing only about 200 rpm. The boat simply digs in and hangs on in perfect control, even when I crossed our wake.”

Guests enter the cockpit via the transom door off Osprey‘s swim platform. An L-shaped settee wraps from the transom to port and is set around a fixed table. Two aft-facing bench seats are forward to port and starboard, flanking the salon door on centerline. Pull up some loose chairs and there’s alfresco dining for six. Side decks with high stainless-steel rails safely lead to the foredeck to get to the ground tackle.

Stepping into the salon, grain-matched cherrywood and a teak-and-holly sole catches the eye. Even the L-shaped sofa to port has a high-gloss wood folding table. A lounge chair to starboard abaft the two-seat helm station, which has uber-comfy Stidd chairs.

Belowdecks, guests will find the mid-level galley and Osprey ’s two staterooms. The portside galley is equipped with a two-burner cooktop, refrigerator and freezer drawers, a sink and a microwave. The forepeak master stateroom has a centerline berth and the starboard stateroom has a double berth. The single head is to port and forward of the galley.

Sabre Yachts combined traditional styling with contemporary comfort in its Sabreline 38 Hardtop Express. A portside settee and table are on the main deck, as are two Stidd helm seats and a wet bar with a fridge and ice maker. Belowdecks are the portside galley, an L-shaped settee that can convert to a double berth, and a forepeak cabin that’s separated from the galley by a sliding door. Top speed is 32.3 knots, and cruising speed is 25 knots. As of November 2022, four 38 Hardtop Expresses were available, ranging from $316,168 to $439,000.

From the Archive

“From afar, the 38 Express shares styling characteristics with her bigger sister, the Sabreline 42 Express. Upon further inspection, however, you’ll notice the subtle tweaks and nip and tucks that naturally evolve in the design process. The transom corners have more of a radius, while the beam increases slightly from the waterline to the sheer. The forward cabin sweeps forward, transitioning in the deck seamlessly.”

The two-stateroom Sabre Yachts 42 Salon Express has a modified V-hull with a 16-degree transom deadrise. Powered by 425 hp Cummins QSB diesels paired to the Zeus pod drives, the 42 Express can reportedly hit a top speed of 34 knots. Using a built-in GPS, its Skyhook feature helps keep the 42 in place. Zeus also helps with maneuverability at planing speeds and around the dock.

The yacht’s interior is varnished cherrywood and there’s a bird’s-eye maple galley sole. At press time, six Sabre 42 Express boats were available, ranging from $345,000 to $995,000.

From the Archive

“The less obvious advantage of employing these drives shows in the general arrangement plan. Zeus allows the designers to place the engines farther aft. This let Sabre move the generator into the machinery space forward of the engine room. The design team was also able to put the washer/dryer combo and a freezer into this space, freeing room in the accommodations for additional stowage.”

Sabre Yachts in Maine is on track for the spring 2022 unveiling of the Sabre 43 Salon Express, which will replace the Sabre 42 Salon Express in the builder’s lineup.

Since 1987, Sabre has built more than 660 boats in the 40 to 45-foot range. The 43 Salon Express will have Down East proportions, a salon with two seating areas, a half-up galley, and a belowdecks hybrid lounge (that can be a guest berth, retreat or private office). The master stateroom has an island berth, and a utility room beneath the salon sole can be used for stowage, laundry, wine chillers or other needs.

The 43 Salon Express also will be the first fully networked Sabre below 58 feet length overall. That means owners can check critical functions, and control circuits or lighting, from the helm’s multifunction displays or an iPad mini.

What other features are built into the Sabre 43 Salon Express? GPS monitoring, geofencing, alarms and more are available via smartphone through an included Sentinel Telematics feature.

The Sabre Yachts 48 Salon Express has an ageless downeast aesthetic combined with modern and user-friendly pod drives and a standard, family-ready two-stateroom, two-head layout. The standard cherrywood interior is warm and inviting.

During our initial sea trial, the Sabre 48, powered with twin 550 hp Cummins diesels with Zeus pod drives, topped out at 34 knots and had a fast cruise speed of 30.2 knots.

At press time, 23 Sabre Yachts 48 Salon Expresses were on the market, ranging from $624,000 to $1,295,000.

From the Archive

“The proportions of the 48 work perfectly, in my opinion. The tumblehome of the transom flows seamlessly into a deck with moderate sheer, which benefits from a cabin-house design that is absent of any harsh 90-degree angles. The rake of the after portion of the house flows into the vertical strut of the upper deckhouse, which is accented by the engine-room vents that carry the same angle.”

Sabre 58 Salon Express
The Sabre 58 Salon Express has an aft-galley setup that easily services guests in the salon and cockpit. Billy Black

The Sabre Yachts motto is “crafted in the Maine tradition,” and the Sabre 58 Salon Express illustrates that motto well. It’s the only American- built, Down East-style yacht in this size range, aside from bespoke vessels.

Everywhere I turned on board the Sabre 58, the company’s 50 years of boatbuilding experience was evident. There was the corner joint in the American cherrywood (not veneer) interior, so seamless that my finger couldn’t find an edge. Same goes for the bank of dovetailed maple drawers in the galley.

The Sabre 58 is the largest model in the builder’s Salon Express line, which includes 38- to 48-footers, but is smaller than the queen of Sabre’s motoryacht fleet, the 66 Dirigo. There are no crew quarters on the Sabre 58, which is designed for owner-operators, a fact that is reflected in the side-deck access door next to the helm seat.

Sabre 58 Salon Express
The yacht’s hull design is by naval architect Kevin Burns and the Sabre design team. It’s a modified deep-V planing hull form with 15 degrees of deadrise at the transom and 24 degrees amidships. Billy Black

That helm has a joystick for controlling the twin 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950 diesels. The joystick is in the armrest of the twin Stidd UltraLeather seats abaft the teak steering wheel. The dash has a cantilevered solid plank of cherry holding a tidy row of rocker switches below a pair of flush 17-inch Garmin touchscreen multifunction displays. With an eyebrow to prevent reflections from the windshield and a “glove box” for the skipper, this space is a wooden rendition of a glass-bridge system. A double-wide companion seat is to port.

On this same deck, stainless-steel-framed doors aft fold away for entry to the yacht’s salon, thus removing the usual demarcation between the cockpit and interior. You’ll be in the galley, and yes, it’s the first aft galley on a Sabre. It’s a couple of steps from the cockpit’s dining table, and two steps from the dinette and settee abaft the helm.

But as Bentley Collins, vice president of marketing at Sabre, points out, “If you use your boat for cruising with family and friends, then what better spot to put the galley than smack in the middle between the indoor and outdoor social spaces.”

Stairs next to the helm descend to an atrium with a skylight. Beyond that are a hidden washer and dryer, as well as the full-beam master stateroom. The stateroom has a 76-by-80-inch king island berth with a 10-inch-thick mattress and an inlaid headboard. In addition to drawers and underberth stowage, nightstands are on each side of the berth, and a pair of cedar-lined hanging lockers have shelves.

Sabre 58 Salon Express
The Sabre 58 Salon Express hull also uses the latest technology of resin-infused biaxial glass, Corecell foam coring, and foam-cored biaxial glass stringers. Billy Black

Forward of the vestibule is the VIP space, with a walk-around queen berth, a built-in bureau and a double-door hanging locker. The VIP’s en suite head has a stall shower with a door and doubles as the day-head, with access from the vestibule. A third stateroom has an en suite head with a shower and twin berths that convert to a double.

Underway, the dynamic-positioning system should come in handy when waiting for bridge openings. The engine room, reached via a stainless-steel ladder by way of a hydraulic cockpit hatch, has a nonslip walkway between the engines. An oil-change system serves the engines, pod drives and 21.5 kW generator. Other items of note here are a pair of 85-foot Glendinning shore-power cords, an isolation transfer on each shore-power service, and a 3.5 kW Mastervolt high-output inverter/charger for onboard power sans generator. There is arm’s-reach access to everything, including the dual Racor Max 1000 fuel filters and the Groco water-intake strainers—not to mention a gloss-white, Mylar-faced foam noise barrier.

Sabre 58 Salon Express
The builder added more space than usual for provisions, with cabinets far above the galley countertops. Billy Black

The Sabre 58 is delivered with a CZone NMEA 2000 networked electrical system that combines onboard Wi-Fi as well as digital switching. Owners can monitor systems and control a multitude of circuits using the provided iPad Mini. (A second iPad Mini is optional.) Launch ports are installed in the salon. The master stateroom has a fixed-network display, and another is in the engine room.

According to Sabre, the 58′s top speed is 31 knots; during the boat’s first cruise from Maine to the Miami International Boat Show in February, it averaged 28 knots from the Shinnecock Canal off Long Island, New York, to Norfolk, Virginia, a distance of about 370 nautical miles over the course of 13 and a half hours. As Collins says, “That’s cruising.”

Sabre 58 Salon Express
The Sabre 58’s Down East heritage is immediately evident in the cherrywood interior, proud bow and trunk-cabin design. Billy Black

Due to the boat’s sound-attenuation insulation, noise levels barely touch 60 dB(A) at the helm—that’s the level of normal conversation—while cruising at 28 knots, according to the builder. Efforts to reduce noise include the use of coring on cabin sides and engine-room bulkheads, as well as tabbing all furniture into place.

Sabre Yachts is entering its 50th year in business, and the Sabre 58 Salon Express embodies the builder’s knowledge base, classic lines and modern use of technology. This yacht is as modern as it is timeless.
