For Yachts or Home, Teak Stands the Test of Time https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/sponsored-post/teak-stands-the-test-of-time/ Fri, 28 Jun 2024 16:36:14 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=64850 Westminster Teak furniture endures over time, season after season, year after year and long after trends are forgotten.

Westminster Teak
Because of its longevity for outdoor uses, teak is a naturally sustainable building material making the pieces both aesthetically pleasing and truly timeless. Westminster Teak

Take a stroll through any high-end marina just about anywhere in the world, and you’re bound to get an eyeful of polished teak trim adorning the luxury yachts you see. But ask Mal Haddad, Vice President, and Head of Design and Development at Westminster Teak—an American company that designs, builds and imports high-end furniture from Indonesia—if you should consider gleaming, varnished teak chairs and tables for your deck or patio, and he’ll just scoff and ask if you have paid crew at home to keep it all rich and shiny-looking.

He likens such glossy furniture—while fine for indoor use—to a high-end fighting chair you might find on a chartered fishing boat. With 12 coats of varnish, it looks beautiful for the day or two you’re aboard, but what you don’t see is that as soon as you leave, the crew is busy washing it down, or sanding and revarnishing any dings so that it looks as rich and luxurious for the next customer. The key to the best investment in acquiring teak furniture is knowledge about the material, craftsmanship in the furniture, and ease in its maintenance. A well designed and beautifully crafted piece of teak furniture endures over time, season after season, year after year, long after trends are forgotten.

Outdoors and in the elements, the real beauty of the wood, he says, is its high oil content and grain structure, which gives untreated teak its longevity and tendency to weather to a lovely gray patina in a wide range of climates, and with very little maintenance. To care for your outdoor furniture, all you have to do is scrub it with dish soap and water, using a soft brush, every couple of months to remove airborne dirt and stains. Don’t, he cautioned, oil the teak, because moisture can find its way under the surface and cause mold or mildew that will stain the wood.

A native of Singapore, Haddad says that a recent trip home gave him the opportunity to see some of the teak furniture again that his parents had around their home when he was a boy. “It looks the same,” he says, “and it’s been around for more than 100 years.”

Westminster Teak
Folding chairs, lounge sets, chaises, ottomans and more uniquely crafted to evoke simple sophistication and casual elegance outdoors. Westminster Teak

When it comes to his design philosophy, Haddad takes a long view. Rather than trendy styles that fall quickly into disfavor, or materials such as plastic and wire that show their age after a season or two, he embraces practicality and longevity that, like his parents’ furniture, looks good and is comfortable for decades. Haddad goes on to share, “Good design should be as relevant now as it was 50 years ago and 50 years from now. The designs are as timeless and enduring as the material itself.”

“As a raw material, teak lasts far longer than the average resin-based wicker or metal furniture that is environmentally less eco-friendly,” Haddad noted in a white paper that he wrote for the company. “Its high oil and silica content make it highly resistant to rotting, warping or splitting, allowing it to withstand the extremities of weather including sun, rain, and snow…. It’s high natural oil content also means it has a comparatively low coefficient of thermal expansion; it does not expand and contract, warp, split, or crack, in humid environments, in contact with water, or even when submerged [in water] over extended periods of time.”

Because of its longevity for outdoor uses, Haddad says that teak is a naturally sustainable building material. But, he adds, Westminster Teak is committed to sustainability in a broader sense of the word. The teak it uses in its factory comes from certified plantations under the management of the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry.

Westminster Teak
Westminster Teak designs are timeless so you never have to worry about your long-lasting furniture going out of style. Westminster Teak

“We purchase wood only from sustainably harvested plantations that are managed and credibly certified by the Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia, ensuring 100 percent transparency as to the origins of the wood, from forest to showroom floor,” Haddad says.

“Our factory was the first to join Nusa Hijau, the Indonesian Chapter of the Global Forest Trade Network (GFTN), an initiative of the World Wildlife Fund. It was created to eliminate illegal logging, improve the management of threatened forests, and promote biodiversity and the livelihoods of the people that depend on them,” he notes.

Westminster Teak also works only with factories that can account for the well-being and medical care of their employees and their families. “In the long run, companies themselves cannot continue to be viable and claim support for sustainability only for the environment without consideration to those who are actually working for them, regardless of whether they are in the fields or factories,” he adds.

Westminster Teak
Recognized as one of the leading online distributors of teak furniture in North America, Westminster Teak is dedicated to offering timeless, sustainable pieces of furniture. Westminster Teak

But in the end, for Haddad and Westminster Teak, the value of the furniture all comes back to Haddad’s concepts of timeless designs.

“Product knowledge is key in understanding the investment value proposition a beautifully crafted piece of teak furniture brings,” he says. “While retaining a select few from our ‘old classics,’ our design team is constantly working to create furniture that evokes simple sophistication and casual elegance.”

The Sweet Spot https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/sponsored-post/princess-f58-the-sweet-spot/ Fri, 31 May 2024 16:30:09 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=64377 Unveiling a new F58 model, Princess Yachts brings that “just right” element to its popular F Class series of flybridge motoryachts.

Princess Yachts F58
Princess Yachts’ new F58 model combines many of the highlights of their larger models with the benefits of a compact size. Princess Yachts America

On the first day of the 2024 Palm Beach International Boat Show, Princess Yachts announced a new model in its F Class range of flybridge motoryachts. Borrowing features from its larger sister and Princess cousins, the new F58 not only sits in the proverbial sweet spot of the F Class, which spans 45 to 65 feet, but also capitalizes on the amenities, evolved styling and next-generation features found throughout the Princess line.

“A flybridge boat of this size is a critical offering for us,” says James Nobel, VP and marketing director for Princess Yachts America. “While customer demand has trended toward our larger offerings in recent years, this year we are seeing more of a mix, with many buyers coming in at the 50- to 60-foot range.”

Princess Yachts has offered several variations of boats in this size range over the lifespan of the F Class, but the F58 hits the “sweet spot,” according to Nobel. Nestled between the F55 and the F65, the new F58 offers a voluminous design that blends many features of the 55 with amenities from the 65 into one enviable package.

“We have clients who love everything in the F65 but can’t have a boat that big; perhaps their marina has a restriction on size,” Nobel says. “Then we have the clients who want just a little bit more volume than the F55. The F58 borrows from the F65 and from other models across our lines.”

Style and Space

What sets the F58 apart in a lineup that includes the F45, F50, F55, F58 and F65? We’ll start with the exterior, which can be summed up in two words: style and space. In its profile, the F58 sports the evolved exterior lines of the newer Princess models, such as the Y72, with a large single-pane side window that wraps around the upper structure. “It’s a style evolution, not a revolution,” Nobel says. Like the F55, the F58 offers the option of a built-in hardtop or an open bridge with an electric or fixed Bimini top.

The Princess F Class wouldn’t be the coveted flybridge class without plentiful deck areas, and the new F58 does not disappoint. The spacious flybridge itself sees the fully equipped wet bar with an electric barbecue situated aft so as to keep the chef close to the action and create more open deck space. Bordered by companion seating and a sumptuous convertible settee to starboard, a centrally positioned helm allows for excellent visibility.

Princess Yachts F58

On the foredeck, the F58 boasts a new style borrowed from the forward lounge design of the Y80, with two multifunctional sun beds with adjustable headrests and storage, as well as a walk-through to the bow. This space can be further augmented with sun awnings and a cool box, creating a private terrace akin to that enjoyed by larger yachts.

Princess Yachts F58
A highlight of the new F58 model is the cockpit area that seamlessly flows to the swim platform. Princess Yachts America

The enhanced volume of the F58’s design is most readily apparent in the cockpit area, which seamlessly integrates with the salon and aft galley, creating an inviting alfresco space that flows to the swim platform and mini beach club transom area—yet another unique feature of this new model. Here, clients have a variety of options to fit out their mini open-air beach club, such as a waterside barbecue with a sink or a dedicated storage area for SeaBobs, dive gear and other water toys. A fold-down transom seat rounds out this perfect spot to enjoy a day of watersports.

Princess Yachts F58
The beach club offers a dedicated area for all levels of watersport desires and waterside barbecuing dreams. Princess Yachts America

Two distinguishing features not immediately apparent in the F58’s styling make a big impact on the lifestyle the F58 offers on the water. The first occurs below the waterline, where a larger engine package of twin MAN V-8 1,000 hp or 1,200 hp diesels (depending on the option selected) propel the 59-foot-8-inch beauty to a maximum speed of 31 and 34 knots, respectively. Second, the F58 is the first sub-80-foot model from Princess to offer sustainable battery-powered silent running or hotel services as an option.

Princess Yachts F58
The increased volume on the F58 allows for separate dining and lounging spaces. Princess Yachts America

Turn up the Volume

That leads us to the interior, which can be summed up with the word “volume.” Maintaining the popular aft-galley arrangement seen on the F55, the increased volume of the F58 allows for a separate L-shaped sofa and coffee table/dinette aft and a larger U-shaped sofa forward, effectively creating two separate spaces for dining and lounging. The aforementioned panoramic windows bathe the interior in natural light, highlighting the signature Princess craftsmanship and the contemporary yet timeless design of this new model. As with all Princess models, F58 clients can select their preferred woods, countertops, flooring and interior soft goods.

The F58 offers a three-stateroom, two en suite layout; however, the increased interior volume here allows for a full-beam master suite with a walk-in closet and a three-quarter-beam en suite just aft of the master bed—more “big boat” features. The VIP is positioned forward, and a twin to starboard can be converted into a third double. And while the F58 is designed for efficient owner operation, it does offer the option of a single crew cabin with an en suite and storage aft.

Princess Yachts F58

A Home Run

It’s obvious that the F58 does a fantastic job of compiling so many features from the larger Princess yachts into its layout while still maintaining its efficiency as an owner-operator boat. How does it compete with the F55? These are two very distinct models, Nobel explains.

“The F55 remains a very strong model both in the U.S. and in Central America,” Nobel states. “But there is a tremendous amount of interest in the F58, and it will be interesting to see the market’s response. It is a bigger step up dollar-wise, size-wise and volume-wise. It has a bigger engine package and many entertainment features you won’t find on smaller models. As with everything we do, when you have a successful model, you want to maintain the positives and evolve it to the next level.

Princess Yachts F58
The F58 is a home run. Princess Yachts America

“We feel the F58 will be a home run,” he says. “Most of our customers are owner operators, couples with young families or grandparents with grandkids who visit. The F58 is very manageable for two people. It’s the sweet spot for us depending on where we are reaching clients in their lifetime.”

Your World, Your Yacht https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/sponsored-post/your-world-your-yacht/ Wed, 15 May 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=64074 A fully custom yachtbuild in the 80-to-150-foot size range? Designed by a renowned designer and built by a heritage yachtbuilder? This is all possible with Dutch builder Van der Valk.

Custom yachtbuilding is not for the faint of heart. It requires knowledge and expertise—not only on the part of the builder, but ideally on the part of the client as well.

Custom yachtbuilding also requires resources—both financial and in facilities and technology. And last but not least, a custom yachtbuild must have solid naval architecture, a well-planned layout, mechanical efficiency, and, oh yes, seaworthiness to ensure a return on investment if and when it enters the resale market.

Project EVO
Project EVO is a bespoke yacht for the family, extended several meters during a design and consultation process that closely involved the clients every step of the way. Van der Valk Shipyard

It’s for these reasons that the world’s leading custom yachtbuilders concentrate, for the most part, on larger builds in the 50-plus-meter arena. Nestled in the southern region of The Netherlands, Van der Valk Shipyard is the anomaly to this theorem.

As one of the only shipyards in the world focused solely on building fully bespoke motoryachts between 25 and 45 meters (82 and 147 feet), Van der Valk not only has experience and expertise, but its builds are also backed by a pedigree defined by solid design and engineering, partner collaborations with the world’s leading designers, and state-of-the-art facilities. Yes, they are Dutch. But the 100-strong team at this family-founded shipyard is quick to point out that its prowess in yachtbuilding extends far beyond heritage.

About That Heritage

Van der Valk was the vision of Wim van der Valk, an avid yachtsman who founded the company in 1967. Over the course of 50 years, Van der Valk built a global fleet of more than 1,000 motoryachts in both steel and aluminum, its early rise to prominence coming from cabin cruisers in the 7- to 10-meter (23- to 32-foot) range. By the mid-1980s, the builder’s Vitesse series of semidisplacement steel and aluminum motoryachts set a benchmark for its strong resale value, which continued with the Continental I, a signature line that dominated the 1990s and early 2000s. In the 2010s, the firm broke into the superyacht sector thanks to collaborative projects with designer Guido de Groot, a partnership that set the tone for the future. Today, Wim van der Valk serves as President Emeritus of the board, advising the management team of Enrico Theuns, Bram Kooltjes and Yoeri Bijker, who leverage decades of combined experience in the high-end yachting industry.

Design and Innovation

Over the past two decades, Van der Valk’s design partnerships have included renowned firms such as Guido de Groot, Ginton Naval Architects, Diana Yacht Design, Carla Guilhem Design, Cor D. Rover and Van Oossanen, to name a few.

While a potential client is welcome to bring a complete vision or drawings to the table that might require a new hull design, most of Van der Valk’s all-aluminum builds are married to previously proven hulls from the builder’s diverse fleet, allowing the client and the preferred designer to focus on customization from the waterline up without reinventing the wheel.

With customization comes forward-thinking clients and pioneering innovations, and Van der Valk has embraced innovative concepts, which have led to award-winning, head-turning builds that have propelled the yachtbuilding industry forward.

In 2013, Van der Valk’s 37-meter (121-foot) Santa Maria T was the world’s first motoryacht to feature a two-axis fin antiroll damping system. The yard also developed hulls and models to specifically integrate the Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system when it was first introduced.

Lady Lene
Lady Lene earned the Boat International Design and Innovations Award for Best Interior Design, among other awards. Van der Valk Shipyard

More recently, the 34-meter (111-foot) tri-deck explorer yacht Lady Lene was designed and built to be completely ADA-compliant and wheelchair accessible. Its overall design garnered a World Yacht Trophy, a Boat International Design and Innovations Award for Best Interior Design, and a World Superyacht Award Judges’ Commendation for “styling and performance quite unlike its rivals in this class.”

Delivered in October 2023, the 34-meter (111-foot) Blue Jeans was one of the most complex yachts the yard has engineered and built to date. This bespoke raised pilothouse features high ceilings throughout its interior (soaring to nearly 8 feet in the salon), a pioneering use of exterior glass for the windows and bulwarks, and a flush bow area with hidden windlasses opening up the space for guest use. Interior features such as liquid metal walls, exclusive use of reconstituted teak, copper accents, rare marbles, and remarkable lighting displays were the finishing touches that led to this marvel receiving its own World Superyacht Award.

Pilot
Pilot, a 34-meter launch model blends robust and masculine proportions with an abundance of curves. Van der Valk Shipyard

Launched in 2023 and delivered this year, the 34-meter (111-foot) Pilot was the first Van der Valk built to American Bureau Shipping standards. Designer Cor D. Rover was brought in for his pioneering vision for high-volume designs by an experienced client who requested a length extension to the maximum-interior-space principle, coupled with a modern, contemporary aesthetic. The result is a three-deck yacht with a self-contained pilothouse, a main-deck master suite with a balcony (echoed for the VIP on the lower deck), a full lazarette for tender storage, and foldout transom wings that extend the swim platform. Van der Valk’s expertise punctuates multiple areas of this eye-catching build, from the automotive-inspired aluminum grills to the large windows, curved shapes, and masculine angles. It too has been nominated for a World Superyacht Award.

From Semicustom to Custom Series

Balking the trend followed by so many custom-turned-semicustom builders, Van der Valk has evolved over the years to focus exclusively on custom aluminum motoryachts fully finished and outfitted in-house in the niche 25-to-45-meter (82-to-147-foot) size range.

The high number of one-off builds over the years has enabled this niche offering and flexibility. Supported by the technical and engineering expertise of a 100-strong team of builders, craftsmen, specialists, painters, and joiners—a rare in-house array of services for a boutique shipyard—Van der Valk’s facilities have evolved to comprise seven state-of-the-art sheds spanning nearly 10,000 square feet and affording a build capacity of four up-to-45-meter (147-foot) yachts at any one time.

Project 111.11
Exterior designer Guido de Groot and interior designer Carla Guilhem join forces on Project 111.11. Van der Valk Shipyard

A recent yard expansion has been timely. With bays full and build slots booked into 2026, Van der Valk’s specialized focus is clearly being met with global demand. Custom builds currently underway include the 34-meter (111-foot) Project 111.11, a RINA-class four-deck, five-stateroom Guido de Groot design with a contemporary interior by Carla Guilhem that expands upon Lady Lene’s proven hull form with twin commercial Volvo Penta 750 hp continuous-duty engines. It is slated for delivery in the third quarter of 2024.

Project 111.11 is followed by Project Samba, a 35-meter (114-foot) tri-deck fast-displacement explorer also designed by Guido de Groot as an exceptional family residence on the sea. Inspired by the outdoors, Project Samba maximizes the yacht’s indoor/outdoor space with a large aft deck, a beach club, a transformer swim platform, and an indoor/outdoor bridge deck salon.

Project EVO
Van der Valk continues to bring “Your World, Your Yacht” to fruition with Project EVO. Van der Valk Shipyard

Repeat clients have brought another new exciting design concept to the yard, and construction has begun on Project EVO, a 39.9-meter (130-foot) round bilged, fast-displacement hull design with a target 24-knot top speed. Project EVO represents the largest yacht that the yard has built to date. With naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design and Ginton Naval Architects, the all-aluminum yacht will feature exterior styling and a bespoke interior design by renowned Italian firm Cristiano Gatto Design.

While current clients claim many of Van der Valk’s build slots, new clients spanning the Americas to Europe to Asia are discovering the Dutch builder’s niche focus, youthful enthusiasm, and concierge-like global after-sales warranty and service. After all, when the message is “Your World, Your Yacht” and the size is within reach, why not?

With a sophisticated aesthetic and attention to detail, the Princess F58 is poised to be a popular choice in the F-Class series. Princess Yachts

The Princess F58 joins the acclaimed F-Class fleet, positioned between the existing F55 and the flagship F65. This latest model continues the series’ tradition of blending elegant design with advanced features, tailored for the luxury boating market.

A key focus of the F58 is its social spaces. The flybridge offers ample room for dining and relaxation, featuring a well-equipped wet bar and electric barbecue. The helm provides comprehensive visibility for piloting and includes an additional seat for a guest or crew member. Additionally, the seating area can be easily converted into a sunpad for those looking to enjoy the sun.  Options for the flybridge include a hardtop, with available opening center section, or a hydraulically retractable bimini top for shade.

The yacht’s deck is not limited to the flybridge; the foredeck includes a flexible ‘terrace’ area, inspired by larger Princess models. It has sunpads and optional amenities like a cool box, providing a comfortable space for entertainment or relaxation.

In the cockpit, the design emphasizes spaciousness and connection, leading into the saloon and galley which merge seamlessly with the outdoor area. The saloon is bright, thanks to panoramic windows, and houses a U-shaped sofa and a convertible coffee/dining table, positioning this area as the social hub of the yacht.

Below deck, the F58’s layout includes three cabins: a forward VIP guest cabin, a convertible twin cabin, and a full-beam owner’s stateroom. The stateroom boasts a luxury ensuite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. An optional crew cabin with ensuite and storage can also be included in the design.

With a sophisticated aesthetic and attention to detail, the Princess F58 is poised to be a popular choice in the F-Class series. The first unit is expected to go into production later this year and will make its debut in early 2025. The F58 represents a balance of luxury and functionality, making it a fitting addition to the Princess Yachts’ portfolio.

All too often, boatbuilders are forced to make compromises. Sure, you can have high-end luxury and innovative features, but only if you give up the option to customize the interior space.

“We made a very conscious decision to do things differently with the Two Oceans 555,” says Dave Jirikovic. “This power catamaran has an edge over all the others in the industry. You get the luxury and innovation that customers demand, but also the ability to customize. Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing’s custom build mentality affords the customer what they want within the constraints of the spatial shell we are working within.”

Jirikovic is the HMY Yachts brand manager for the Two Oceans 555 Power Catamaran, which is the first model the company is offering for sale from South Africa’s Two Oceans Marine. The “triple five,” as the boat is known, is a power catamaran of a higher order than what many people think of when they hear the word “catamaran.”

The Two Oceans 555 has a customizable décor, a choice of layouts, multiple power options, smart systems for quieter cruising, U.S.-industry standard components for ease of service, the volume of a 70-foot monohull—and, yes, properly separated shower and toilet stalls. It’s the kind of powercat that discerning boaters have been demanding, boaters who know how creature comforts look and feel aboard top-brand monohull powerboats.

“Demand is changing,” says Tim Derrico, director of sales for HMY Yachts. “And the amount of real estate you get is enormous.”

The Two Oceans 555 can be ordered with a three-stateroom, three-head layout, or with different variations on a four-stateroom, four-head layout.

In the Owner’s Version, there are three staterooms. The entire starboard hull is the master, while the portside hull houses two additional staterooms—one forward for guests, and one aft for crew.

The On-Deck Master version has four staterooms and four heads, with the master on the main level and two guest staterooms in the starboard hull. The portside hull has a crew stateroom aft.

In the Open Plan version, there are also four staterooms, but they are positioned with two staterooms in each hull (the portside aft stateroom again for crew). The main level becomes an even bigger entertaining space that includes an open galley and long bar. This is the version that’s expected to be popular among owners who plan to offer the powercat for charter. As of December 2023, it was the most frequently ordered version among the 14 hulls of the Two Oceans 555 that HMY Yachts had sold.

Beyond choosing the layout, owners can customize the interiors with various wood veneers, fabrics and more. Bulkheads can’t be moved, Jirikovic says, “but within the box, you can do a lot.” As an example, he cites Hull No. 3, which arrived in the United States in December: “This build alone had 116 change orders added.”

Importantly, he adds, installations are all done at the Two Oceans Marine shipyard in South Africa. Parts and components from U.S.-friendly suppliers are shipped there so the boats arrive on U.S. shores ready for use, instead of needing further fit-out.

“Anything and everything that anybody would want, the boat’s ready to run. Put fuel in it and go,” Jirikovic says. “This a massive departure from industry norms where owners have come to expect losing a month of cruising time upon the boat’s arrival, and an expense of $40,000 to $60,000 to commission a new build, to actually make it operable. We wanted to eliminate this headache for the customer, and we did.”

Another thing that HMY Yachts worked on with Two Oceans Marine was ensuring that the Two Oceans 555 is built for serious cruising. The powercat is certified CE Class A for ocean use. Crossing the Gulf Stream to explore the Bahamas or Caribbean islands can be part of an owner’s plans, and the powercat’s class-leading draft of 3 feet, 6 inches will allow anchoring just about anywhere. Protective keels shield the running gear in case the water below the boat gets too skinny.

Owners can easily expect a top speed in the upper-20-knot range, Jirikovic says. This powercat’s design—combined with custom conical Humphree Interceptor tabs and exclusive tunnel design by Teignbridge Ltd.—lifts the after section to ease the vessel’s motion.

“If you look at other boats in this segment, they’re stern-heavy when underway,” he says. “They look like they’re struggling to get up to speed. The Two Oceans 555 runs nearly flat underway, at about 1.5 degrees of upward angle at cruise. The high-speed performance numbers showcase the engineering involved. The 555’s design gives you the speed you want, but also dynamic efficiency at low speed.”

Power plants are by Cummins—with the ability to get parts and service pretty much anywhere—and all electrical systems are by Victron Energy, an industry-leading Dutch company that focuses on electric power. The Two Oceans 555 with the optional Off-Grid Package includes a bank of Victron Energy lithium-iron-phosphate batteries that provide over 50 kW of storage. That setup, along with efficient 48-volt wiring and systems, means the boat can be at anchor while using lights, air conditioning, refrigeration and more, but without the need for a traditional, noisy generator.

Instead of that traditional generator, the Two Oceans 555 with the optional Off-Grid Package has a 9 kW Integrel Solutions PTO generator on each engine. It requires zero maintenance, and it recharges the batteries at a speed comparable to an electric vehicle’s super-charger. (It’s way faster than plugging into a standard outlet.)

And, with the addition of solar panels, Jirikovic says, another 6 kW or 7 kW of power can be generated in silence. “You’re pretty much at net-zero or even net-positive in terms of daytime energy use,” he says, “even running all the air conditioners on the boat.”

Boaters who are new to these systems can take comfort in the Victron Energy user interface, which displays all the information needed to make sense of what’s happening.

“You can monitor the Victron network on the dedicated boat system screen, on your phone, at the helm via the Garmin plotters, or if you’re connected to Wi-Fi, so you can manage the system remotely,” Jirikovic says. “The system does the math for you in real time. There’s a countdown timer so you know exactly how to manage your loads to the maximum and create a sustainable grid.”

He adds that the improvements to the overall cruising experience are impressive: “If you’re like me and you’ve been on boats all your life, you’re used to exhaust smells and equipment noises all night. The 555 with the Off-Grid package is a total departure from those historical norms.”

In a nutshell, Derrico adds, the Two Oceans 555 is designed, built and outfitted for boaters who know how cruising in comfort should feel, and who want it all in a powercat.

“The Two Oceans 555 is a boat for the person who really wants to use it,” Derrico says. “It’s for going exploring.”
