The Paralenz Dive Camera weighs 5.6 ounces, so it can easily attach to a mask strap. It logs the dive and the photos, so users know at which depth they shot which image (and can share that info with friends via an app). And in what Paralenz calls a first, the camera auto-filters for lack of light at various depths — meaning photos never come out murky greenish-blue.

J Class

The pages are filled with stunning photos that capture the essence of sailing. Zach Stovall

Specialty publisher Delius Klasing in Germany has just released the impressive coffee-table book J Class, which includes large, four-page foldout photography in addition to text about the iconic sailing yachts.

The book focuses on Endeavour, Hanuman, Lionheart, Rainbow, Ranger, Shamrock V and Velsheda, and includes both historic and modern-day photos from races and regattas. Readers learn not only about the yachts, but also about the men and women who have owned and raced them.

Text that accompanies the photography is by Wiel Verlinden, and is translated in German and English. He brings the classic yachts to life with passages like this one: “So Elizabeth Meyer bought the wreck, raised it out of the mud and towed it to Southampton. The restoration of the Endeavour—and with her the adventurous history and renaissance of the new J Class—began under a tarpaulin on a derelict shipyard site in Calshot, where large flying boats had been built in the second world war.”

Makes a great gift: J Class comes in a keepsake, full-wrap photo box that is ideal for displaying on bookshelves.

Wooden Nautical Chart

The best charts aren’t always electronic; hanging a nautical chart is an easy way to spice up the decor aboard your yacht or home. Uniquely Nautical makes one-of-a-kind 3-D nautical charts that are sure to have your guests talking. Whether your boating playground is a pond or the Pacific Ocean, it can be etched into a decorative piece of wood. Various levels of incisions on the artwork provide a depth to the display. Further personalization comes in the ability to have a picture of your home, boat or even some of your favorite watering holes carved into the map. Text can also be added to the chart to commemorate a special occasion, making this an item you’ll want to pass on to future generations. Check out the video below to see how these 3-D charts are made.

Gift Guide Tout

We all know that the real gift of the holiday season lies not in stuff but in the moments spent with loved ones — the joy of conversations with family, meals full of laughter, celebrations with friends. Yet presents are a tradition of the season, and thoughtfulness counts. This year, we made a holiday outing to the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut, and brought with us some gift ideas for the nautical enthusiast. We previewed them for the fish, and present them now for you in our annual Holiday Gift Guide.

Other great gift ideas:

Books on sailing legends, wooden boats, and Herreshoff schooners.

New electronics from Simrad, Bridge Command, and Iridium.

A donation to organizations that help maintain the health of our seas.

New deck hardware for your yacht.

Ocean

Eddie Berman

As boaters, we spend a lot of time — or as much as we can — on the water. Whether it is a lake, a river or the open ocean, the water’s surface is our playground, our home away from home. But for myriad fish, insects, mammals, plants and ecosystems as varied and numerous as the stars in the sky, it is home. And for this reason, we must be stewards of this environment, preserving the world that lies beneath the waves so that the next generation of yachting entusiasts can point their bows to a clean horizon. This holiday season, the best gift for the boater in your life may not come in a box, but in an envelope as a donation to one of these organizations and their missions, educational programs and overall goals of maintaining the health of our seas.
