The Absolute Yachts 52 Fly shares design cues with its recently launched sisterships, the 56 Fly and 60 Fly. These yachts are easily recognized by their snub bows, chopped transoms, sculpted hulls and topsides, and big hullside windows, which give away the location of their owner’s staterooms.

As with the flybridge, the 52 Fly’s cockpit terrace is left bare so owners can choose from a range of exclusive modular furniture by Absolute or from other sources. The vessel’s glass balustrade, which tops off the transom, and the fretted bulwarks aft make for even stronger visual connections to the sea and provide great views for seated guests.

Absolute 52 Fly
From interior accouterments to unusual outdoor features to stylish overhead lighting, the details are endless. Courtesy Absolute Yachts

The 52 Fly’s foredeck is also a welcome retreat, especially with the sunshade and side screens up. The space accommodates an island sun pad, as well as a low dinette with double sofas. The flybridge is similarly splendid, and the hardtop comes standard with solar panels that contribute 1.35 kW of peak power, enough to cover the yacht’s basic hotel loads (not air conditioning) without the generator or shore power.

With nearly 360-degree views, the salon consists of an aft galley to port with Corian worktops, and a view between them and the cabinets above. An amidships lounge has a dinette to port and a three-seat sofa to starboard. The vibe is cool and contemporary, with drop-down electric windows on each side. They help keep the temperature moderate when the air conditioning is off.

The two-seat lower helm is to starboard, with great ergonomics and unobstructed visibility. Garmin touchscreen displays provide all the essential information, and other controls are conveniently situated. A side-deck door allows a proper connection with the outside world. A second two-seat helm station up on the flybridge is to port. That means there’s always a fresh-air connection available for the skipper, no matter which side he needs to see when close-quarters maneuvering. An optional third docking station can be added in the cockpit, with joystick and thruster controls for stern-to docking.

Like the rest of Absolute’s portfolio, the oomph for the 52 Fly comes from a pair of Volvo Penta diesels and IPS pod drives. The 52 Fly’s 600 hp D8-IPS800s deliver a nominal top speed of 30 knots and a 25-knot fast cruise. I saw a top-end average speed of 30.5 knots on reciprocal runs with the trim assist on, the Seakeeper gyrostabilizer off, and the boat lightly loaded. Only four people were aboard, with no tender or stores, 26 percent fuel, and 44 percent fresh water in gentle swells.

Underway, handling is surprisingly responsive. Spin the wheel hard over when running flat out, and the yacht heels gently into a relatively tight turn without scrubbing off much more than 3 knots of speed. The turning circle is not much more than three boatlengths.

At my favored cruise-forever dawdle of 10 knots, the diesels burned just 14 gph. Given the tank capacity of 475 gallons, that means a range of 340 nautical miles. The yacht is least efficient at 13 to 15 knots, with fuel burn around 73 gph. Once over the hump, the cumulative burn tracks down gently from 2.5 gallons per nautical mile at 14 knots to 2.25 gallons per nautical mile at 30 knots, so you may as well rush. At a continuous fast cruise of 25 knots, range should be around 225 nm.

Absolute 52 Fly

Noise is not an issue. I recorded just 64 decibels at the helm at 20 knots (65 decibels is the level of normal conversation). In the owner’s stateroom at the same speed, the tank buffer for the engine room meant just 72 decibels. It was 75 decibels in the double-berth stateroom aft.

Both heads that serve the three staterooms have windows and opening portholes. The owner’s en suite stateroom occupies the full beam forward, with big bow windows and plenty of space around a forward-facing queen berth. There’s also full-standing headroom here. Amidships is the VIP, also with a forward-facing queen and its hullside windows. The guest stateroom has twin berths that convert to a double. It’s good to see there’s enough space in the lobby beneath the companionway stairs for a washer-dryer.

There’s also lazarette space aft that includes a head-shower compartment, but it can alternatively be specified as a single-berth overspill stateroom or a crew cabin. (A teenager would love it.) As on some of the other newer Absolutes, it’s accessed discreetly from the hydraulic swim platform via a pantograph-style door in the transom and a half-hatch.

Absolute 52 Fly
A glass balustrade eliminates the visual barrier to the sea. Owners can personalize the yacht’s cockpit layout. Courtesy Absolute Yachts

There’s a lot to like about the Absolute 52 Fly: solid performance, a high level of personalization, and a pugnacious build to cruise across blue water. Add its luxurious flourishes, and you get a family-friendly owner-operator yacht that should have broad appeal.

How It’s Made

Relatively complicated hull and superstructure shapes dictate a wet lay-up build rather than resin infusion. Interiors, including the bulkheads, are assembled outside the hull. They are built up from CNC-cut flat panels before being moved by crane and then bonded to the hull walls and stringer system. Then the superstructure is placed.

Where It’s Made

Absolute Yachts is based in Podenzano, Italy, between Genoa and Milan. Employing around 300 people on a 500,000-square-foot site, the company builds around 90 boats a year. The average length is about 60 feet.

Wide Range

Absolute Yachts’ 14-model lineup ranges from 47 to 75 feet, with seven Navetta models, six Fly models and one Coupé yacht. Production is split about evenly between the Navettas and the planing models. The next new models are expected to be the Navetta 53 and Navetta 70, with debuts planned at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.

Maritimo M60 Reviewed https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/maritimo-m60-reviewed/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 19:00:08 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=64531 Maritimo's first 60-footer launched two decades ago. The builder's new M60 adds even more to the fun with the adventure deck.

Dubbed the “adventure deck,” the Maritimo M60’s cockpit is a blank slate for owners to interpret. Courtesy Maritimo

Twenty years ago, I traveled Down Under to run the first 60-foot Maritimo. I thoroughly enjoyed that boat, so much so that I was excited to run the new Maritimo M60 recently in Florida. Cut to the chase: This new M60 is like a favorite flavor of ice cream, but with sprinkles added on top. Maritimo listened to customers and reviewers, taking a solid yacht and making it better.

At first glance, I thought the exterior seemed the same, but then I realized it had been gently massaged. The original “wings” over the side decks had disappeared at one point, but now they are back, providing shade to the salon and some rain protection on deck. Most importantly, they allow the upper deck to expand to the same width as the salon.

Maritimo M60
The salon is pure entertainment, with a U-shaped couch facing an L-shaped settee and a pop-up TV. Courtesy Maritimo

I boarded the yacht via what Maritimo calls the “adventure deck,” an expanse of teak with an optional hydraulic platform. I checked out the engine room before it heated up and found it well laid out for service. Headroom is 6-plus feet, there’s a nonslip walkway with safety rails between the engines, and all points have easy access. Standard power is a pair of 800 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels, but this M60 had the upgraded 1,000 hp Volvo Penta diesels. The 27.5 kW Cummins generator, Quick X30 gyro and SeaXchange watermaker had room to spare. A trio of fuel tanks can be used to balance the boat’s running angle, and all wiring and plumbing is secured to high standards.

Maritimo stayed with conventional shaft drives, which not only lower the boat’s center of gravity, but also keep the shafts efficiently flat at 8 degrees, turning six-blade nibrals in a prop tunnel for shallow-water running. The variable-deadrise hull form is knife-sharp forward and flattens aft, providing a good running surface (and adding to the engine-room space).

Maritimo M60
From the full-beam owner’s stateroom to the salon and galley, satin-finish walnut adds an elegant touch. Courtesy Maritimo

Back on the adventure deck, the lazarette/garage can handle a 10-foot-3-inch tender, a pair of personal watercraft, or a mix of water toys. The cockpit has a console with an outdoor kitchen and settee.

Three folding doors open into the galley, which is amidships and to port for easy food delivery to the cockpit and salon. The L-shaped galley’s island has extra counter space, and there’s an array of Miele appliances, including a full-height fridge, an induction cooktop, a dual oven and a microwave. A foldout pantry to port should hold enough goodies for a week aboard.

The salon is pure entertainment (read: there’s no lower helm), with a U-shaped couch facing an L-shaped settee and a pop-up TV. Oversize windows enhance the sense of space.

An airy stairwell leads down to a foyer with a washer-dryer and a three-stateroom layout. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is amidships for minimum motion. It has a king-size berth and bureaus under each full-length window. Its en suite head has a stall shower.

Forward, the VIP stateroom has an angled queen berth to give it full walk-around space. There is direct access from the VIP to the day head with a shower. The guest stateroom has twin berths that convert to a double. Decor on the M60 that I got aboard was an intricate satin-finish walnut with a herringbone inlay.

But the real sprinkle on this cone is the flybridge, which feels like a sky lounge in size and intention. Gentle stairs lead inside from the salon for safety to the fully enclosed space. The bridge is climate-controlled with sweeping windows, making it a spot where guests can gather on the two L-shaped settees. The skipper’s private office is forward, with a pair of leather seats abaft a pale-gray dash. An eyebrow protects three 19-inch Garmin displays from reflection. Tidy monitors keep track of the Volvo Penta engines and the Quick gyro, with an array of neatly labeled push-buttons for various systems.

Bi-fold doors open the bridge to the shaded 118-square-foot aft deck, which has a teak sole and a settee well-protected by the overhang of the house.

Maritimo M60
High bulwarks and deep, wide decks hint at this Australian build’s stout nature. Courtesy Maritimo

To understand how the Maritimo M60 performs, you must know that it comes from Australia’s Gold Coast, north of Sydney. Local Maritimo owners do not have a protected Intracoastal Waterway. They cruise with few harbors in which to hide. That coast, facing the Pacific Ocean, endures waves that build across thousands of nautical miles of open ocean. When I ran that first Maritimo 60 in those waters, I called them “ugly.”

By comparison, my run aboard the new M60 off the coast of Florida was in long rows of 3- and 4-footers marching against the Gulf Stream. In friendlier seas, Maritimo says, the M60 can top 30 knots. Here, it hit a solid 26 knots. The ride was comfortable on the bridge, with no yawing or measurable pitching (except in big holes). What particularly impressed me was that there wasn’t a creak or a groan from the sturdy hull. Even with the rear doors open, I recorded a quiet 65 decibels on my meter. We talked at a conversational level.

As I said, I appreciated the first Maritimo 60 when I stepped aboard 20 years ago. Today, I appreciate all the sprinkles Maritimo has added. This yacht is a taste of the good life, indeed.

Power Play

Volvo Penta built a reputation in Europe among truck and commercial-vehicle operators with the D13, an inline-six-cylinder diesel engine that uses high-pressure injectors, an overhead camshaft, and twin-entry turbos with water-cooled exhaust manifolds. The bulletproof reputation easily translated to yacht use, where the powerful torque and rapid spool-up provide strong performance.

How It Started

Longtime boatbuilder and powerboat racer Bill Barry-Cotter started Riviera Yachts, sold it, and then launched Maritimo Yachts in Australia. His son, Tom, now has an expanded role with Maritimo, which builds eight models from 55 to 75 feet length overall in Flybridge, Sedan and Offshore series.

Sirena Yachts in Turkey says preparations are underway for the U.S. debut of the Sirena 48 at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, which is scheduled to take place March 21-24 in Florida.

The Sirena 48 is the builder’s new entry-level model. According to the shipyard, 27 of the hulls are already sold, including 13 that are bound for owners in the United States.

“Similar to the Sirena 58, the new Sirena 48 has the qualities to become another bestseller for Sirena in the USA and the Americas as a whole,” Constantinos Constantinou, head of operations for Sirena in North America, stated in a press release. “The anticipation and excitement for her arrival is very high already.”

The yacht joins Sirena’s other models, which include the Sirena 58, the 58 Coupe, and the 68, 78 and 88.

The builder expects the Sirena 48 to be popular with owner-operators. The semi-displacement hull is designed to be efficient in displacement mode, but also to permit fast planing performance. Naval architecture is by Germán Frers.

Features include a swim platform sized to carry a tender or personal watercraft. Owners can choose from layouts that are open, or that have a more traditional aft deck. The crew cabin can be replaced with extra stowage.

In all the layouts, the flybridge is extended with an alfresco dining area and numerous sun pads located forward.

Inside, accommodations include three guest staterooms and the optional crew cabin. The owner’s stateroom, according to the builder, is comparable in size to what’s typically aboard a 60-foot yacht.

The hardtop of the coupe version gives the Sirena 48 a sportier exterior and brings natural light into the salon below. This version also reduces the yacht’s weight and windage, improving performance for owners who select the option of electric propulsion. Solar panels set into the hardtop roof help to prolong the operating range of the yacht under electric power alone.

“As an all-weather yacht offering an unprecedented level of choice and flexibility for a boat in her size range, we anticipate that she will be very well received across both the Mediterranean and U.S. markets,” Sirena Yachts COO Ali Onger stated in a press release. “The fact that we’ve already sold more than 27 of these units to date speaks for itself.”

Let’s talk performance: According to the builder, the Sirena 48 can achieve top speeds of 27 knots, with a cruising speed of 17 to 20 knots. Economical cruising speed is 10 knots. The hybrid version is driven by twin 213 kW (285 hp) electric motors for a top hop of 14 knots. In silent electric mode, the boat can draw power directly from the battery bank to cover up to 30 nautical miles before switching on the variable-speed generators, according to Sirena.

At just over 52 feet length overall, the Riviera 46 Sports Motor Yacht is the Australian builder’s new entry-level model in the series, and it’s set up to host good-size parties and to cruise with friends and family.

For starters, consider the after section of this yacht’s main deck. Between the cockpit and the shaded alfresco deck, there is 115 square feet of socializing real estate. The swim platform has two transom doors leading to the cockpit with a barbecue, a fridge/freezer, a wet bar and an ice maker. Forward, there is a settee on either side, with a folding teak table to port and the option to place a TV in the forward portside corner.

The 46’s interior space is set up to serve guests easily too. The galley is aft and to starboard, accessed through a sliding-glass door from the alfresco deck. The galley has a two-burner cooktop, a microwave and a fridge/freezer, along with a C-shaped countertop with plenty of space for meal prep. Plates and beverages can be sent to guests relaxing on the alfresco deck via a starboard-side window that lifts upward or can be brought up to guests on the flybridge by way of portside stairs.

Forward, there is a U-shaped settee to port with a dining table and an L-shaped settee to starboard. This is a good place for lunch with a protected view on days when the weather makes being outdoors uncomfortable.

Up top, the 46’s flybridge has virtually uninterrupted, 360-degree views and more gathering spaces. The forward section has a two-seat settee to port and a C-shaped settee with a dinette to starboard. A wet bar in the after portside corner helps serve guests without having to go downstairs.

Belowdecks, there are three staterooms and two heads. The forepeak master has an en suite head to starboard and a portside closet. Then, there are two twin-berth guest staterooms amidships and a day head to port that doubles as the portside accommodation’s en suite head. Riviera also gives owners the option to place a double berth in the portside stateroom.

The 46’s sole helm station is located on the flybridge. With two multifunction displays and two helm seats, it’s positioned in the after starboard corner and offers clean sightlines. There are two seating areas forward for guests. Courtesy Riviera

Standard power is twin 600 hp Volvo Penta D8 IPS800s, with an option to upgrade to twin 725 hp Volvo Penta D11 IPS950s. With the latter power package, Riviera says the 46 Sports Motor Yacht can hit 34.5 knots at 2,560 rpm. At 24.5 knots and 2,100 rpm, range is reportedly 286 nautical miles.

Fairline Phantom 65 Reviewed https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/fairline-phantom-65-reviewed/ Fri, 19 Jan 2024 20:00:00 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=61810 The Fairline Phantom 65 is a sport-bridge yacht with 36-knot speed and luxe finishes.

The post Fairline Phantom 65 Reviewed appeared first on Yachting.

Fairline Phantom 65
Fairline offers four layouts: three with three staterooms (one with a day head, one with an extended VIP and one with a utility room) and a four-stateroom setup. Courtesy Fairline

Yachts are flashy by nature. Their luxurious comforts, by design, shout flair and opulence. The Fairline Yachts Phantom 65, however, shows off in a subtler way. From stern to bow, this sport-bridge model has hidden features that can transform spaces in big and small ways.

Take, for example, the quietude of the cantilevered teak table in the cockpit. It connects the transom seating with the starboard-side, L-shaped settee to create an alfresco dining area big enough for all guests to enjoy. The two settees can also become one with a sliding hideaway connector from the transom settee, and diners can add the two stools from the indoor dining space, should guests drop by for dessert.

Also inside is a U-shaped settee to starboard with a high-gloss table that can raise for meals or lower to become a coffee table—all on the same level as the cockpit and galley, which is aft in the portside corner. The galley’s location, combined with an electrically powered fold-up window to starboard and a sliding-glass door that hides behind the portside stairs, creates one interconnected socializing space for entertaining and serving.

Fairline Phantom 65

Forward and a step up, the salon has two settees: one that’s U-shaped and to port, and a two-seater to starboard. The portside seating can be accompanied by a coffee table or a replica of the dining area’s versatile table. To starboard, a TV rises from the console.

Lighting is another design priority aboard Fairline’s Phantom 65. Hullside windows on either side of the salon measure 93 by 36 inches, providing unobstructed views. Both are tinted and covered with UV-reduction film, as are all windows on this yacht, including the single-piece windshield. The sunroof above the salon allows for more natural light. For evenings on board, the Phantom 65 has intimate white mood lighting throughout most spaces.

Fairline Phantom 65

More subtle touches are on the foredeck, which can serve as a private gathering space at marinas where the yacht will dock stern-to. Fairline maintains a clean look here by hiding the windlass and anchor chain in the deck. Abaft that working area are two sun pads that can be elevated with backrests, and a U-shaped settee with a teak table that can be lowered out of sight.

Belowdecks, Fairline offers four layouts: three with three staterooms (one with a day head, one with an extended VIP and one with a utility room) and a four-stateroom setup. Hull No. 7, which we got aboard, had the portside utility room with an additional full-height fridge/freezer, an ironing board and stowage. In the extended-VIP version, the forepeak stateroom’s head replaces the utility room and serves as a day head. In the day-head layout, the utility room becomes a fourth head. The four-stateroom option places a stateroom with bunks in the same space.

Fairline Phantom 65

In every layout, there is a twin-berth guest stateroom to starboard that can convert to a double. The master spans the full beam amidships with a sofa to port and a vanity to starboard. Additional drawers can replace the portside sofa.

The Phantom 65 has a pair of two-seat helm stations: one to port on the sport bridge and the other to starboard on the main deck. Both stations are equipped with Garmin electronics and are sized for three 16-inch multifunction displays. The Phantom 65 also has the builder’s F-drive software, which monitors all of the yacht’s systems.

Fairline Phantom 65
Owners can choose a canopy fixed with four carbon-fiber poles at the bow of the Fairline Phantom 65. Courtesy Fairline

Powered by twin 1,622 hp C32 Caterpillar engines, the Phantom 65 topped out at 36.2 knots and 2,300 rpm, with a fuel burn of 178 gallons per hour. Considering the yacht’s 1,103-gallon fuel capacity and a 10 percent reserve, range is 202 nautical miles at top hop. Dial back to a cruising speed of 26 knots at 2,100 rpm, and fuel burn drops to 99.8 gph. Range pops up to 258 nm. The Phantom 65’s engine room is accessed from a cockpit hatch. Everyday checks are accessible from the entry point.

Fairline’s Phantom 65 is a yacht with no need to shout about its high quality and style. The shipyard’s thoughtful design and construction, combined with the yacht’s performance metrics and versatile features, speak quite beautifully for themselves.

Made to Fit

The Fairline Phantom 65 has an aft garage that’s sized to accommodate an 11-foot-3-inch Williams Sportjet 345 without having to deflate the tender or remove its steering wheel. This garage also has a hydraulic winch and a roller system for easier launching and retrieval of the tender.

Quiet Design

Fairline designed the master stateroom with no water pipes running beneath it, helping to reduce noise. Water from the master’s head travels aft, while water from the forward heads moves forward. Noise is also mitigated by the master’s 6 1⁄2-inch-thick after bulkhead, which is built with sound-deadening materials.

A timeless profile, flowing sheerline, luxurious appointments and a high-tech build make the Palm Beach Motoryachts 50 Flybridge highly sought after by experienced yachtsmen. Courtesy Grand Banks Marine Group

Mooretime, a PalmBeach 50 Flybridge, is currently listed with Grand Banks Marine Group with an asking price of $2.145 million. The 2021 build has a two-stateroom, two-head layout, with sleeping accommodations for up to six people thanks to a settee in the salon that converts to an additional berth.

Mooretime has an galley-aft layout, meaning the galley is between the salon and the cockpit and can easily serve both spaces. To port, a window to the cockpit opens to form a pull-up bar with two stools. There is also an L-shaped countertop, which has a two-burner cooktop. A refrigerator has enough space for provisioning a family cruise. To starboard is more counter space as well as a dishwasher, a sink, extra stowage and a microwave.

Forward of the galley, the salon has an L-shaped settee to port and a bench seat to starboard all set abaft the bench-seat-style helm station. Additional companion bench seating is across from the helm station to keep the guests and the captain within earshot while underway.

Accommodations are belowdecks with two staterooms. Forward, the forepeak master stateroom has a custom-tapered island berth with an enlarged mattress, an en suite head, an under-berth stowage locker, a 32-inch flat-screen TV and a hanging locker with stowage and mirrors. The guest stateroom to port has a custom pull-out double berth, reading lights, a mirror, shelving, under-berth stowage and head access.

This yacht is penned for al fresco living and stepping aboard owners and their guests will notice the dance-floor-size cockpit with an L-shaped settee to port set against the transom. Owners will also appreciate Mooretime’s shallow draft too, as the skinny-water friendly yacht has a sub-three-foot draft.

The Palm Beach Motoryachts’ 50’s flybridge has a four-person booth setup with two facing bench seats and a fixed table abaft the bench seat upper helm station–a great spot for alfresco dining. The foredeck, which has a three-person bench seat, is a great spot to enjoy morning mimosas or sundowners after dropping the hook.

Twin 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels provide power for Mooretime, giving it a 33-knot top hop and a 28-knot cruise speed.

Anybody writing about the history of Maine’s Down East boatbuilding culture would have to include the name Jarvis Newman and at least a few of the vessels that his yard produced. Born in 1935, he spent his teenage years lobstering and fishing in Long Island Sound, then worked at a variety of jobs before moving to Southwest Harbor to work in the fiberglass department at what would go on to become Hinckley Yachts. Newman realized that sailboat owners needed a rowboat or tender, so he started building them. In 1970, Jarvis Newman Boats was formed, and its powerboats and Friendship Sloops started to dot Maine’s harbors.

Today, it’s increasingly unusual to see any of the 90 boats that Jarvis Newman built come up on the brokerage market. About half of the original builds went to commercial fishermen, with the other half going to recreational boaters—meaning there were only ever about 45 of the classics available for cruising yachtsmen at all. Some have undergone restorations or refits, and those that present in top condition are especially precious when they show up for sale in the marketplace.

Hence the $375,000 asking price on Bounder, whose hull was built by Jarvis Newman and then shipped to Lyman-Morse for custom-built interiors and systems. Ever since this boat’s finishing in 1988, it’s had just one owner, and it has been stored as well as maintained at Lyman-Morse.

Some of the more recent work includes stripping and revarnishing in 2019, the addition of a new flybridge enclosure that same year, and the addition of new house and starter 8D Lifeline AGM batteries in 2021.

Earlier, in 2008, the boat underwent a repower with an 800-horsepower Caterpillar 3406E. According to the team at Lyman-Morse, the engine gives Bounder a top speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 17 knots.

The boat has a classic feel in just about every respect, inside and out. Its solid fiberglass hull is painted with Awlgrip’s flag blue, along with a red and white boot stripe. The house is Awlgrip’s Matterhorn white, and inside, the Herreshoff aesthetic includes a varnished teak and holly sole. Furniture and cabinetry is white, with varnished raised mahogany trim and doors. Overheads are white with laminated mahogany beams and trim. All the thru-hulls are bronze.

What features are in the owner’s stateroom on Bounder for comfortable overnights? It has heat as well as air conditioning, and an opening portlight for fresh air.

Vikings are built to fish, and with Norden Dame it starts in the dance-floor-size,119-square-foot cockpit. This 44-foot fishing machine is rigged with angling amenities such as Rupp outriggers, an in-deck freezer, an Eskimo ice maker and a transom box, plenty of space to stow your yellowfin and bigeyes. The cockpit’s mezzanine seating gives the crew a nice perch to keep an eye on the trolling spread. This sportfisherman’s primary mission is fishing, but add a few loose chairs and a table to the cockpit and there’s alfresco dining for family and friends.

From the Archive: Viking Yachts 44 Convertible Impresses

“Last February in Miami Viking debuted its new 44 Convertible, and the pocket-sized sportfish wowed the crowds. The boat is highly versatile, and can be kitted out to be tournament ready, or simply act as a speedy and stylish two-stateroom cruiser.

The 44C comes on the tail of the 44 Open, and shares many of the same attributes, particularly when it comes to a smooth ride and quick acceleration out of the hole. However, since the yacht is a convertible, it expands upon the Open’s creature comforts, and has a true salon and a luxurious interior that make her even better for spending time on board, particularly if you want to do overnights or cruise where weather is regularly inclement.” – Yachting, 2018

CL Yachts CLB65 Reviewed https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/cl-yachts-clb65-reviewed/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 20:00:00 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=61616 The CL Yachts CLB65 is a 24-plus-knot motoryacht with a bluewater build and an ageless design.

The CL Yachts CLB65 pairs traditional good looks and a timeless profile with impeccable planning for short-handed cruising by owner-operators. It’s also the first CL Yachts model with an aft galley, a design choice that underlines a clear objective: entertaining.

Seaworthy touches can be found in spots such as the cockpit, where a joystick control station is concealed in each cabin side to make docking painless, and where husky warping winches are on each stern quarter to take the muscle out of line handling. But at the same time, the entire after bulkhead of the yacht’s house is glass that folds up or hinges to the side, opening the salon for alfresco living. With the galley aft, the chef can pass food to the casual dining settee to starboard or across the cockpit bar to the outdoor table. Inside, a U-shaped couch is forward with a cleverly designed coffee table that morphs into a laptop desk.

The decor is also designed to look timeless and, for owner-operators, to be easily maintained. Off-white bulkheads are accented by exquisite joinerwork. The wraparound galley has Corian counters, a Bosch four-burner cooktop, a Vitrifrigo stand-up fridge, two under-counter drawer fridges and a convection oven.  Stowage reaches into the farthest corners, and dishware is secured in a dedicated pull-out drawer. A wine chiller is accessible from the salon or cockpit.

At the helm, there’s a double-wide Stidd seat abaft dual 17-inch Garmin multifunction displays. The list of standard electronics spans three pages and includes Fantom 54 radar and VHF radios. Four cameras (aft, on the side decks and in the engine room) share the monitors, and the entire package is duplicated on the flybridge. Other controls include the Volvo Penta IPS joysticks, a CZone electrical panel and Volvo Penta active Interceptor trim tabs. Next to the skipper, a pantograph watertight door opens to the side deck.

The side decks are comfortably wide at 20 inches with high coamings capped by 40-inch-high rails for safety. They lead to a sitting area on the foredeck with a couch and chaises, ideal for a private moment at anchor or when Med-moored. A stout Maxwell windlass handles the 200 feet of chain rode.

Another interesting detail is that the CLB65 is built on a shortened version of the CLB72 hull, so this yacht has the nearly 20-foot beam of the longer yacht. Designed by Howard Apollonio, this hull design is noted for its comfortable seakeeping ability. Construction is of exceptional quality, with multiaxial E-glass using blister-preventing vinylester resin. Carbon fiber is used in load-bearing areas, and the CLB65 is built to the RINA class that starts with the original drawings and continues with regular inspections during construction.

Natural light, white bulkheads, neutral tones and light-wood soles create a sense of airiness in the staterooms. Courtesy Lightseed Studio

When it comes to accommodations, the CLB65 takes full advantage of that wide beam. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is precisely amidships for minimum motion at sea. Its king-size berth is offset to allow for two full-height closets, bureaus and a vanity. The master’s head (with a one-piece ceramic sole) has Euro-style his-and-hers sinks with Grohe faucets, while the stall shower has a wall spray and a rain shower. Hidden outside in the companionway is a full-size GE washer-and-dryer setup.

The forepeak VIP has an island queen-size berth, a cedar-lined closet, hidden lighting and a vanity. Its en suite head also has the ceramic sole and stall shower. Off the center corridor is the en suite guest stateroom, with twin berths that convert to a double. On the CLB65 that I got aboard, a utility room abaft the engine room was optioned to become an en suite crew cabin.

Up top, the flybridge is accessed via gentle stairs. There are two wraparound seating areas, along with a dining table, a fridge, an ice maker, a grill and a sink. Much of this area is shaded by the fiberglass hardtop that is integral to the radar arch.

CL Yachts CLB65
Twin 800 hp Volvo Penta IPS1050 diesels give the CLB65 a 21-knot cruise speed and 24.4-knot top-end speed. Courtesy Lightseed Studio

The engine room showcases CL Yachts’ commercial shipbuilding experience with rails around the engines for safe underway checks, space to access all systems, and meticulously labeled wiring and plumbing that is secured to high standards. A shiplike electrical panel fills the forward bulkhead, and oil and water filters are at knee level. The 27 kW Onan genset sits on a raised platform, and a Delta-T system reduces moisture. The CLB65 I was aboard also had the optional Seakeeper gyro, CMC at-rest stabilizer, Blue Water watermaker and Besenzoni passerelle.

Power for the CLB65 is a pair of 800 hp Volvo Penta IPS1050 diesels, which provided fingertip precision for maneuvering and docking, and a surprising turn of speed. This yacht hit 24.4 knots and settled into a 21-knot cruise at a cost of about 50 gallons per hour, a testament to Apollonio’s slippery hull form when moving 40-plus tons of luxurious fitments.

With beautiful lines, impeccable detailing, a robust build and solid performance, the CL Yachts CLB65 is worth a look for owner-operators who want timeless styling, cruising adventures, and at-sea entertaining with friends and family.

Volvo Penta Interceptor System

Conventional trim tabs raise or lower a yacht’s bow when running, or correct heel from wind or weight. Volvo Penta Interceptors, part of the company’s Electronic Vessel Control setup, have an auto mode to adjust the boat to its most favorable running angle. But unlike hinged trim tabs, Interceptors drop vertically to create the same effect. They’re built with corrosion-free materials, so they do not require protective anodes.

What Is RINA Class?

RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) is an international classification society for boatbuilding safety in design, construction and maintenance. RINA’s team starts by approving yacht-design drawings, and then monitors vessel construction and provides periodic surveys to maintain a yacht’s RINA status.
