If ever there were an aptly named yacht, it’s the Sunseeker Predator 75. At rest, it has the purposeful look of a raptor straight from Jurassic Park. A striking midnight-gray hull and rakish lines only add to this effect.

As the sound of turbos spooled up on the optional 1,900 hp MAN V-12s (1,550s are standard), I couldn’t wait to see what this yacht could do. Sunseeker’s captain grabbed a handful of throttles and shoved them to the pins. We shot out of the inlet at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as though we had launched from a slingshot. The Predator 75 with this engine package is capable of 40 knots in decent conditions, which we didn’t have; the Gulf Stream was delivering an endless chain of 3- and 4-footers, so the best we saw was 33 knots. But the yacht seemed as though it had seen prey on the horizon, and it shrugged off the square-edged seas with impunity.

The door from the cockpit to the salon is a surprise: It slides easily to starboard and then, poof, the door and window above it slide down electrically, creating a huge dayboat nonstop from the helm to the transom. Harry Tiger/Tiger Co

Then I realized that Sunseekers are built on the edge of the English Channel, whose seas the Gulf Stream can’t touch for being just plain ugly. The yacht was leveraging its hull form’s 20-degree transom deadrise and fine entry to slice and dice our way through. The captain used the windshield wipers only once, after a particularly big hole in the ocean.

Also notable is that the Predator 75 is more than just quick and seaworthy. It is luxurious and well laid out for entertaining and cruising. Guests can step aboard the hydraulic swim platform, pass the transom garage that conceals a Williams SportJet 395, and ascend gentle stairs to each side. The cockpit fairly shouts entertaining, with a sun pad and a wraparound settee with a high-low table for alfresco dining. Opposite are an electric barbecue, fridge and ice maker, so nobody has to use the galley to prepare grilled delicacies or access cold beverages.

The door from the cockpit to the salon is a surprise: It slides easily to starboard and then, poof, the door and window above it slide down electrically, creating a huge dayboat nonstop from the helm to the transom. Need more fresh air? Open the six-panel sunroof for a salty breeze. The entire interior feels open, in this case with a silver-oak interior and whitewashed oak soles, making for a modern look with easy cleanup.

Another carbon-fiber high-low table is inside the salon, wrapped by a settee to create an entertainment area with a 55-inch pop-up TV opposite. Another settee wraps around next to the helm, allowing guests a view of the action as well as spectacular 360-degree views through the oversize windows lining the salon.

Sunseeker Predator 75
Raked windows forward and side windows keep the galley bright. Harry Tiger/Tiger Co

The skipper has a pair of stitched Italian leather, fully adjustable electric seats abaft a black dash with 16-inch Garmin monitors. A pantograph door gives quick access to the side deck. The Sunseeker Predator 75 that I got aboard had Side-Power bow and stern thrusters, and Side-Power stabilizer fins. Running beam-to-seas with the fins on, the Predator 75 was rock-solid. Even Aunt Edna wouldn’t be bothered by the motion.

A galley is at the base of the stairs from the salon, with a four-burner Miele cooktop, a Vitrifrigo home-size fridge and two freezer drawers. Nearby is a 33-bottle wine chiller. I admit that I’m not a fan of galley-down layouts, but in this case, Sunseeker left the galley open to the windshield above, creating an airy and bright atrium effect. An L-shaped dinette is just forward of the galley, in a spot that would serve nicely for morning coffee and croissants before heading out.

Sunseeker Predator 75
The owner’s stateroom spans the full beam. Harry Tiger/Tiger Co

The Predator 75 that I got aboard had the three-stateroom layout, which is nice. Owners can trade away the dinette by the galley if they want to add a fourth guest stateroom. On this three-stateroom setup, the owner’s space spans the full 17-foot-8-inch beam and has hullside windows to create a voluminous feel. The berth is nearly king-size with full walk-around real estate. A lounge to port invites savoring a spy novel, while a bureau to starboard includes a tidy vanity with a hidden stool. The owners also have a walk-in closet, twin nightstands with drawers, and an en suite head with a stall shower.

Forward, the VIP stateroom has an island queen-plus berth, a private head with a shower, and a vanity with a stool. Between these two staterooms is a guest stateroom with twin berths that slide together into a double. This stateroom has direct access to the day head, also equipped with a stall shower.

Sunseeker Predator 75
The foredeck sun pad is adjustable, and the U-shaped seating has a Bimini top for shade. Harry Tiger/Tiger Co

A twin-berth crew cabin is accessed from the transom and has its own head and shower. This can also be a great place for teenagers who want to play music.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention the foredeck of the Predator 75, which begs for entertaining at anchor. It has a sun pad and alfresco dining around a U-shaped settee with a table that seats eight. Access to the bow is via wide side decks made even more secure with high coamings topped by sturdy, welded rails.

The Sunseeker Predator 75 is a yacht designed for maximum entertaining inside and out. And like a true predator, it has enough speed to run down anything on the horizon.

Tailored-Fit Tender

The Williams SportJet 395 and the Sunseeker Predator 75’s tender garage are designed to go together. This 12-foot-8-inch RIB can carry five passengers on 40-knot adventures. Powered by a 90 hp Rotax Ace engine, the tender has a towing post for water toys. The bow has automatic deflation and inflation to let it slide into the tender garage.

Big Iron

When introduced for the luxury yacht market, MAN’s V12-1900 was the most powerful high-speed four-stroke diesel in the world. Its compact size is thanks to a redesign of the injection and cooling systems from the company’s truck-bus series MAN V-12. The turbocharger has an air intercooler, and the engine is noted for quick throttle response and Environmental Protection Agency Tier 3 emissions quality.

Sunseeker says it is making final preparations for the world debut of the Predator 55 at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.

The Sunseeker Predator 55 is expected to be one of nine models as large as 100 feet on display from the builder at the show. Others will include the Superhawk 55, Manhattan 55, Manhattan 68, 75 Sport Yacht, 76 Yacht, 88 Yacht, 90 Ocean and 100 Yacht.

As for the Predator 55, it will be the smallest of three models in the Predator line, which also includes a 65 and a 75. The shipyard says the 55’s curved silhouette and sloping hardtop design are intended to distinguish it from competing 55-foot yachts, giving it a fresh style in keeping with the other Predator models and the overall Sunseeker brand.

“Rooted in performance, the Predator 55 is a thoroughbred Sunseeker,” Andrea Frabetti, CEO at Sunseeker International, stated in a  press release. “The launch of this fun yacht is a significant milestone for our brand.”

Sunseeker’s Predator models have always included a strong performance component. One of their key selling points is that they’re built to blow the skipper’s hair back. The 55 is no different in this respect. Power is a pair of 1,450-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS950 engines, which Sunseeker says produce speeds up to 36 knots.

Notable features and amenities on the Sunseeker Predator 55 include retractable glazing and a carbon fiber sunroof, allowing for control of the natural lighting and fresh air that guests experience inside. There’s an integrated tender garage that’s sized to stow a Williams TurboJet 325, and a hydraulic swim platform and a sun pad are aft for water-sports fun. Retractable doors connect the cockpit and galley, creating an indoor-outdoor relaxation area for the owner and guests alike.

Accommodations belowdecks are for up to six people. Courtesy Sunseeker

At the foredeck, there’s additional seating and a sun pad with integrated stowage. Sunseeker also included a carbon fiber shade for sun protection.

Owners can specify an optional gyrostabilizer to reduce rolling at anchor, and interiors can be customized—including relocating the main-deck galley to the lower deck, creating a larger main-deck entertainment space.

Belowdecks, accommodations can be for as many as six people.

What company did Sunseeker work with on interior fabrics and finishes? Design Unlimited played this role with the Predator 55. The idea is to allow for color schemes and materials that match each yacht owner’s preferences.

IYC has welcomed the 88-foot Sunseeker Exit to the charter market, with bookings available this summer in Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia.

Exit is a 2023 build that was refitted this year, with the owners adding new indoor and outdoor lighting that lets guests customize the onboard experience to match their personal preferences and moods on any given day. The refit also included the installation of new carpeting, wallpaper and artwork throughout the yacht.

The interior is described as contemporary and stylish, with wide windows in the main salon that allow guests panoramic views of the surroundings. According to the team at IYC, the way that Sunseeker designed Exit makes the yacht seem much larger than it is.

Accommodations are for a maximum of 10 guests in four staterooms. In an unusual outfitting twist, the door for the master stateroom is custom made so that the space can connect with the starboard guest stateroom, or be removed to create a unified space.

Separate quarters accommodate four crew, which is the yacht’s standard complement for charters.

Exterior guest spaces include the flybridge, which has sunbathing areas and alfresco dining. Exit also has shaded areas for outdoor guest relaxation. A hot tub is among the amenities, with a large swim platform for access to the water.

Equipment on Exit includes zero-speed stabilizers to enhance guest comfort at anchor. According to IYC, the yacht’s top speed is 26 knots with a cruising speed of 20 knots, making it a good choice for charter clients who want to spend more time in destinations and less time traveling between them.

Charter clients can pay for this booking in cryptocurrency: IYC recently announced a partnership with Bitcashier to allow the use of cryptocurrency in yacht sale and charter transactions. The system includes the use of bitcoin along with a secure payment portal, locking in the cryptocurrency price at the moment of the transaction. Bitcashier then converts the cryptocurrency into the required fiat currency, completing the transaction. According to Raphael Sauleau, the CEO of IYC: “We have carefully chosen this esteemed platform as our ally in cryptocurrency transactions, confident in their expertise and integrity. As yachting embraces new waves of clients attuned to the dynamics of a rapidly changing world, our partnership with Bitcashier symbolizes our confidence in adapting to this evolving landscape.”

New Elevated Charter Experiences https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/cruising-and-chartering/sunseeker-azimut-thirdhome-charter-options/ Mon, 17 Jun 2024 19:00:09 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=64671 There are two new and innovative ways to experience a crewed charter for Azimut and Sunseeker yachts.

Connoisseurs of high-end travel are always looking for the next best idea. Even at the upper extremes of luxury, there might be a way to tweak this piece or twist that part in a way that creates an even more perfect offering for an audience that wants a certain type of experience. Crewed yacht charter? It’s a fantastic option that already comes in many tantalizing flavors. But what about crewed yacht charter and… all the additional possibilities that last bit might include?

Such is the thinking behind two new initiatives that allow vacationers to experience top-brand yachts in new ways. Motoryachts built by Sunseeker in the United Kingdom and by Azimut in Italy have long been considered prime-quality options for recreation on the world’s waterways. Now they’re available for crewed charter through programs intended to appeal to clients with specific sensibilities.

Crewed charter aboard a Sunseeker 95 in Mallorca, Spain, is now an option for members of ThirdHome, a company whose members share their second and third homes, sort of like a high-net-worth Airbnb. The company has partnered with Meros Yachtsharing, which specializes in the co-ownership of Sunseeker vessels. People who have flex-share time aboard the yacht can now trade it for a stay at a ThirdHome property or vice versa.

“It’s all about the huge rise in interest in the sharing economy and the idea of sophisticated people sharing valuable assets between like-minded individuals, ultimately for the benefit of each other,” according to the ThirdHome team.

Meanwhile, fans of the Azimut brand now have a dedicated point of entry for booking crewed charters aboard Azimut-built yachts. The Azimut Charter Club, announced in January, is kicking off in the Mediterranean this year.

Sunseeker 95

“The philosophy of the Charter Club is to offer a personalized service with attention to the smallest details, guaranteed by the brand’s expertise and the territorial coverage ensured by its extensive network of dealers and partners,” according to the Azimut team. Bookings are available aboard yachts up to 78 feet long, all of them launched within the previous five years.

Of course, Azimuts also remain available for charter through traditional companies whose fleets include yachts from all kinds of builders, but Azimut also aims to bring fans of the brand into contact with its dealers, who will handle check-in and checkout during the charter experience.

“Other models will soon be added, as well as new destinations,” the company says, “to ensure the perfect setting for a summer with family and friends.”

Azimut Charter Club

Yachts that are part of this initiative are as large as 78 feet length overall. Each one is a late-model launch from the previous five years. Guests can book through a portal or work with the Azimut concierge on reservations and legal paperwork. An Azimut dealer handles check-in for charters.

Prime Property

Members of ThirdHome have access to private residences, villas and luxury estates in addition to a fully crewed Sunseeker yacht.

The 2002 Sunseeker 64 Manhattan Lady Sadie has three staterooms, a crew quarters, and yet is easily handled by an experienced owner-operator. Lady Sadie is on the market for $500,000.

Lady Sadie is powered by twin 800 hp MAN D2848 diesel engines, which reportedly produce a top speed of 30 knots. Fuel economy and range will increase when dialed back to a 25-knot cruise speed.

Primary access to the flybridge is via a set of stairs in the cockpit, but there is a second set of stairs at the main-deck helm. Lady Sadie’s flybridge is open, but a new Bimini top gives owners and guests the choice of sun or shade. Guests can relax on a 270-degree settee with table on the aft deck or join the captain on a bench-style lounge  to port across from the helm. Grab a beverage from the wet bar and enjoy the ocean breeze while preparing a few burgers on the grill. Some of the navigation gear includes the following:

  • New black dash with flush-mount electronics
  • New electronics
  • Dual Garmin 8616 displays at lower helm
  • Gamin 8616 and 943 displays on flybridge
  • Garmin autopilot
  • Garmin xHD radar
  • Garmin GMS10 network expander
  • Garmin GXM54 antenna
  • Garmin AIS800 AIS module
  • Fusion RA770 head unit
  • Bow thruster with Dockmate Control Engine interface
  • Fusion remote
  • Bow thruster remote

The salon boasts nearly 360 degrees of glass, flooding the interior with natural light and offering panoramic views. Courtesy HMY Yacht Sales

Lady Sadie’s cockpit has a synthetic teak sole and guests can relax on an aft bench-style seat with table and chairs, catch some rays on the swim platform or walk up to the foredeck lounge to get away from the crowd. The cockpit ice maker is a plus, but just through the sliding glass doors is the galley aft and the salon. Open the sliding glass door to create an open-air environment from the cockpit to the helm forward.

Lady Sadie’s salon has nearly 360 degrees of glass that allow natural light to flood the interior and create panoramic views from all points. Relax on the leather sofa to port while catching a game on the fold-down TV. Forward and up a few steps from the salon is the C-shaped dinette to starboard with adjacent sofa and  the helm station. The galley aft is to starboard, which is my favorite type of galley setup. Owners are able to prepare meals and easily entertain guests in the salon, dinette, cockpit and flybridge. Galley amenities include the following:

  • Custom countertops
  • Four-burner cooktop
  • Custom gold sinks and faucet
  • High-gloss wood finishes
  • Fridge/freezer
  • Ice maker
  • Microwave
Sunseeker 64 Manhattan

After a long day on the water, owners and guests can retire to one of three staterooms. The master stateroom is full-beam with an en suite head and a king-sized berth. Forward is the VIP stateroom with V-berth and en suite head. The third guest stateroom is abaft the VIP and to port with three twin-sized over/under berths with a shared head. Crew quarters are  available and could also be used for extra stowage, or possibly the perfect berth for the teenage boys.

HMY Yacht Sales stated, “The Manhattan 64 is one of the most popular Sunseeker yachts ever produced. With her triple salon windows and a sculpted form, the 64 is a study in modern yacht design when she was introduced in 2001. Built on a deep-V hull with a wide beam and propeller tunnels, her three-stateroom interior is notable in that the galley is aft in the salon rather than forward—an exceedingly practical design that makes the galley much more accessible from the cockpit”.

I have always loved navigating after dark. As a youngster, I did it often during offshore racing, yacht deliveries and big summer cruises. I love to see the lights on the water—all the lighthouses, buoys, ships and other boats—and the twinkling distractions ashore. Alas, most of what I do afloat these days is compressed into the hours of daylight, which is why a recent trip aboard a Sunseeker 100 Yacht proved a rare treat.

This particular Sunseeker 100 Yacht had spent the previous 10 days at the Southampton International Boat Show. I went along for the ride to the Sunseeker yard, where the boat would be cleaned and prepped for its owners. This would be a four-hour passage starting around 5 o’clock on a Sunday afternoon. When our lines slipped, it was just shy of high water, which meant we would increasingly get tide help for much of the 60 nautical miles or so that lay ahead.

Our course down Southampton Water was broadly 135 degrees, which we held for around 10 nautical miles before easing around to Calshot Spit. Once into the Solent, we headed west on a ground track of approximately 250 degrees for 20 nautical miles before edging up to 285 degrees for the 23-nautical-mile Poole Bay crossing.

Once across, we headed northwest through the harbor heads and up the narrow 10-knot channel that weaves from the Poole Bar buoy to Sunseeker’s West Quay Road yard. This is where all of the builder’s biggest models are fitted out and commissioned. The latter half of the voyage was in darkness and increasingly wind-over-tide choppy, with a southwesterly whisking up a 4- to 6-foot swell.

Sunseeker 100

The biggest diesels available for this model are twin 2,640 mhp MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls, which should mean a top speed of at least 30 knots. However, our boat had the standard twin MTU 1,920 hp 12V 2000 M96Ls, which delivered close to 25 knots through the water and nearer to 26.5 knots over the ground. At a fast cruise of around 17 knots, with the diesels spinning about 2,000 rpm, the range would be around 415 nautical miles. Slow down to 10 knots and the yacht could run as far as 1,500 nm on full tanks.

Turns are pretty prompt, given the vessel’s half-load bulk of around 220,000 pounds. We kept the CMC Stabilis Electra fins and the Intruder trim system active, and they kept the bow up between 3 to 4 degrees, with roll and pitch nicely in check. Overall, the ride was remarkably comfortable and surprisingly quiet. At full chat, I recorded just 62 decibels at the lower helm with the doors shut, and 57 decibels at a fast cruise. (Normal conversation level is 65 decibels.)

The view from the mostly glazed, raised pilothouse is surprisingly good, especially given the aggressive styling in the windshield’s rake. Instrumentation was on three Simrad touchscreen displays. An L-shaped bench sofa/pilot berth could turn the pilothouse into quite a snug hub on passage.

Sunseeker also offers an upper helm position, and wing or stern stations. With or without that second helm, the upper deck’s layout is asymmetrical. In a first for the yacht builder, the upper deck connects via sloping side decks to the forward terrace’s booth seating and sun pads; farther forward, a foredeck tucks deep into the bow. The foredeck is accessed via a short set of steps to port, while a companionway connects aft from the terrace to the portside deck. The after end of the flybridge is open to a degree of owner interpretation. This Sunseeker 100 had the optional hot tub with flanking sun pads, an oval dining table amidships, and a three-stool wet bar abaft the raised pilothouse steps.

Sunseeker 100
The full-beam, on-deck master stateroom has access to a secluded foredeck terrace. Courtesy Sunseeker International

Down in the cockpit area, the transom conceals Sunseeker’s X-Tend sun bed, which opens up as a swim-platform lounger or can lift up to extend the usable space (with balustrades). All of this amounts to a beach-club experience, yet leaves room for a garage that can accommodate a 15-foot jet tender and a PWC.

For an extra bit of luxury, there’s the light, bright main salon. Full-height picture windows along both sides combine with free-standing furniture to create a contemporary, chic vibe. The lounge aft and formal dining forward are a conventional layout. Forward and to port is the galley, with a lobby and day head to starboard.

There is actually three-tier functionality in the hull and superstructure forward of the pilothouse: the foredeck terrace up top; three cabins for five crew with a crew galley; and an owners’ stateroom in between. The owners’ stateroom is accessed via the main-deck lobby to starboard, past walk-in closets and an inviting rain shower en suite. More picture windows flank a forward-facing king berth, and six steps rise to a sliding glass door that connects to the foredeck as the owners’ private retreat.

The lower deck’s layout is conventional, with four en suite staterooms for as many as 10 guests. Two staterooms amidships have king berths, while the other two are forward with berths that can be configured as twins or doubles. They can also have Pullman berths.

Sunseeker 100

After such a pleasant cruise, I wished I could have spent the rest of the evening aboard or, better still, gone to sleep with the excitement of where we would take the Sunseeker 100 Yacht tomorrow.

Pushing the Envelope

It seems like only yesterday that Robert Braithwaite, who founded Sunseeker, walked me proudly through the first-ever Sunseeker to break the 100-foot barrier. It was the Manhattan 105, and the first one belonged to Eddie Jordan of Formula One fame. It was called The Snapper. Overall, 11 of the 105s were delivered between 2000 and 2006. At the time, it felt like a gigantic leap forward for Sunseeker, whose previous flagship, the Manhattan 80/84, had taken the title from the Manhattan 74.

Now, 22 years later, I was aboard the fifth 100 Yacht, with six or seven others already afloat. Since that first Manhattan 105, around 140 Sunseekers from 100 to 155 feet have been delivered.

Historic Shipyard

Sunseeker’s home is in Poole, England, a port north of a well-sheltered but mostly shallow natural harbor on the South Coast. The surrounding area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known as the “Jurassic Coast” because cliffs along its 100-mile coastline are packed with fossils dating back about 200 million years.

Bamboo White Chilewich wall coverings throughout, not only warm the interior, but also create an inviting textured effect.”

2020 Azimut Atlantis 51 – Utopia – Lewisville, Texas

“Azimut Yachts’ Atlantis 51 is an express cruiser aimed at families looking for a vessel with home-like cruising comfort, multiple entertainment spaces and admirable performance. MarineMax currently has Utopia, a 2020 Azimut Atlantis 51, listed for $1.199 million, which represents a $100,000 price reduction.

Utopia’s sleek lines are accented by a raked windshield, which is accented further by elongated and tinted hullside windows that visually lower the yacht’s profile.

A shallow 4-foot, 3-inch draft makes the 53-footer beach- and sandbar-accessible, while twin low-hour (191) 600 hp Volvo Penta D8 diesels push Utopia to a reported 35-knot top hop and a 32-knot cruise speed. It’s also outfitted with a Seakeeper NG6 gyrostabilizer to make the ride as stable as a table.”

2018 Sunseeker Predator 68 – Gravitas – Miami, Florida

“It’s not every day that prospective owners have the chance to purchase a zero-hour used yacht, but that’s exactly what’s available with Gravitas, a 2018 Sunseeker Predator 68.  The supersize express cruiser is listed with Allied Marine for $2.195 million; however, the 68-footer has two brand-new 1,200 hp MAN diesels with a full engine warranty from the manufacturer.

A powerful combination of design elements come together in the Predator 68 with stylish, sleek lines, 38-knot performance and a variety of onboard entertainment spaces–inside and outside.

Done with your morning swim and looking to catch some sun? Take your pick between the foredeck sun pad or the cockpit sun pad. The cockpit has alfresco dining space for everyone aboard at a U-shaped settee and fixed folding table. The grill makes serving the aft dining space a breeze.”

Zeelander Z55

2016 Zeelander Z55 – Fancy – Dania Beach, Florida

This Dutch-built Zeelander Z55 listed with Atlantic Yacht and Ship at an asking price of $1.745 million looks like a little ship. From its proud bow to its robust, heavy-duty hardware, this express cruiser seems ready to roam.

And roam it can. Power is a pair of 900 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200 diesels that reportedly gives this 55-footer a 32-knot cruise speed and a 38-knot top hop.

Fancy, as this Z55 is called, is all about connecting guests on board to sea and each other. Nearly 360 degrees of glass create a constant connection to the sea, bring in light to the salon and helm and provide unobstructed sightlines for the skipper. Need more natural light? There is a retractable sunroof over the helm and dinette.

2021 Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin – Coronado, California

“The Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin is fast, fun, adventurous and capable. Listed with Jeff Brown Yachts, the asking price is $369,500.

With a reported top-end speed of 47 knots, the Axopar XC Cross Cabin is a fast and responsive vessel. Powered by twin 300 hp Mercury V8 outboards, this boat turns heads as it dices a seaway. Cruising speed is about 31 knots. Dial it back to 3,500 rpms and roughly 28 knots, and range is about 280 nautical miles.

Open the pilothouse’s sliding doors, sunroof and Gullwing doors and guests can enjoy an open- air environment while blazing across the water. Relax on the foredeck sun pads, or in fold-down cushioned seats on the roomy aft deck. As guests take a swim, enjoy a few drinks from the wet bar. Shower off on the aft deck before heading in for a short lunch break to cool off.

2012 Riva 56’ SportRiva – Gabriela – North Miami, Florida

“The Riva 56′ SportRiva is a yacht where Italian elegance and luxury meets innovative design. The focus of the 56′ SportRiva’s design is on the huge curved windscreen glass,” Yachting previously reported. “The windscreen panels extend across and up and over the lower helm and what looks like a secondary windscreen above is purely a contrasting decorative panel. The flybridge has its own prominent reverse-angle windscreen that challenges the flowing lines and adds a hint of aggression to the style but you reap the benefits of this screen out at sea when traveling at speed.”

Now step aboard Gabriela, a 2012 Riva 56′ SportRiva.

2018 Pershing 62 – Behike – Fort Lauderdale, Florida

“Gilman Yachts currently has Behike, a Pershing 62, listed for sale with an asking price of $1.75 million. This 2018 hardtop express cruiser is known for its combination of luxurious appointments and 45-knot speed.

“As for cruising, hold onto your hats. Like all Pershing yachts, the 62 goes like the ballistic missile that is her namesake,” Yachting previously reported. “Her standard pair of 1,550 hp MAN diesels mated to Arneson ASD 14 surface-piercing drives propelled the 62 to a 45-knot top end and a fast cruise of 36-plus knots, according to Pershing. At these speeds, those MANs would burn well over 100 gph, but hey, one has to put 3,100 horses to work occasionally, right?””

2008 Sea Ray Sundancer 60 – Three Sons – Washburn, Wisconsin

Three Sons, a Sea Ray Sundancer 60, is listed for sale with Atlantic Yacht & Ship and has an asking price of $769,999. The 2008, 34-knot-plus express cruiser has cruising accommodations for six within its three-stateroom layout.

Three Sons is powered by twin 1,100 hp MAN V-10 diesels, which is the same propulsion setup Yachting experienced during our initial sea trial of the Sea Ray Sundancer 60.

“With the luck of the draw, winds and seas were such that running offshore would have been at best unpleasant. Even the Intracoastal Waterway was stirred up, but the 60 had no problem slicing through the chop,” Yachting previously reported. “Her two 1,100 hp electronically controlled, common-rail MAN diesels reached maximum turns in approximately 30 seconds without hesitation and I recorded a maximum speed of 34.8 knots.”

The Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht Optimist is for sale. It sleeps seven, has alfresco dining and a 30-knot top hop. Asking price: $649,000. Courtesy Gilman Yachts

2013 Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht – Optimist – West Palm Beach, Florida

“Gilman Yachts has listed Optimist, a 2013 Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht, with an asking price of $649,000. The express-style cruiser has a two-stateroom, two head, layout that can sleep seven thanks to a convertible sofa in the lower salon that converts into a Pullman berth forming upper and lower bunks.

One of this yacht’s highlights is the helm-station experience. Yachting has previously reported how well Riviera designed the double-leather-seat helm space on the 5000 Sport Yacht, including its sightlines: “Two forward-facing windows have uncluttered views and are served by decently sized wipers. Add the long side windows and the open after bulkhead, and you have a near-flawless, 360-degree line of sight.” Additionally, there is a retractable sunroof in case the skipper wants to bring breezes and more natural light into the salon. The helm is also set up with a Garmin electronics suite, including multifunction GPS, displays, radar, autopilot and more. There is also joystick driving and a Skyhook vessel-positioning system.”

2021 Riva Dolceriva – Epica – Huntington, New York

The 48-foot Riva Dolceriva Epica, listed with Allied Marine, is for sale and is asking $1.9 million. The 2021 build has only 175 hours on its Volvo Penta diesels, has a 40-knot top hop and has two staterooms for cruising with family and friends.

The outside spaces aboard this yacht include two sun pads that flank the teak-sole cockpit. Immediately forward and to port is a four-person L-shaped settee and a table that folds out to create a larger dining space with the three-person bench sofa to starboard. The helm is forward and to starboard.”

Sunseeker Ocean 182
A raked house and flybridge structure, combined with hullside glass, give the Sunseeker Ocean 182 a sleek profile.

The Sunseeker Ocean 182 is named for its gross tonnage, not its 89-foot length overall. Gross tonnage measures internal volume, which is fitting because this British boatbuilder maximized every inch of space on board to enhance the cruising experience.

Stepping into the salon, I was immediately impressed by the 7-foot sole-to-ceiling salon windows, which help the gathering area to feel immense. A sofa to starboard can easily seat eight guests across from the 65-inch 4K TV. To port, Tiepolo leather armchairs and a Silestone coffee table create a conversation nook near the breeze from the open sliding side doors. The low-profile furnishings add to the sense of openness, with big views all around, from the aft deck to the forward windows.

Sunseeker Ocean 182
The aft deck converts to a beach club—and more. There’s a hydraulic platform for access to and from the water.

The decor also feels lush. Sunseeker blended brushed-oak soles with an insert carpet in the salon—as well as satin-finish smoked eucalyptus and gunmetal gray lacquer on the consoles and cabinet doors—to create depth, character and a sense of tactile luxury. A curved staircase to the flybridge enhances this sensibility even more: It’s styled to be unobtrusive yet graceful, with floating steps and polished stainless-steel railings.

Forward and to starboard is the dining table, under the forward windows for yet more natural light. Sufficiently elegant for formal or casual meals, it’s adjacent to the galley, which has Miele appliances and enough countertop space for a couple of chefs to work.

Sunseeker Ocean 182
The owners’ stateroom is full-beam and just forward of amidships with volume-enhancing hullside windows and 6-foot-11-inch headroom.

Entertaining is one of the main objectives of the Ocean 182, and it’s evident in every aspect of its design. Work areas are minimized to reduce or eliminate wasted space. Case in point: the helm. There is a flybridge helm but no lower station, which means owners can enjoy the forward main-deck space with guests.

The sense of luxury carries through to the lower-deck accommodations. The owners’ stateroom is full-beam and just forward of amidships with volume-enhancing hullside windows and 6-foot-11-inch headroom. A vanity to port doubles as a desktop with a workspace. To starboard is a sofa. The walk-in closet is a great touch, and the en suite has his-and-hers sinks and a shower stall.

Sunseeker Ocean 182
Inside or outside, this yacht is about creating a relaxing vibe on board.

Three en suite guest staterooms include a forepeak VIP with a double berth, a stateroom with a double berth abaft the master to port, and a stateroom with twin berths across the companionway to starboard. Two crew cabins with a head and mess area separate the guest areas from the engine room.

Up top, where some yachts have a flybridge that looks like an add-on, the Ocean 182 has a raked main-deck superstructure forward. It flows seamlessly up into the equally raked enclosed flybridge. Angular supports flank the bridge and rise dramatically toward the aftersection of the hardtop, punctuating the yacht’s muscular profile. To me, the forward section of the hardtop appears as a subtle hat tip toward the sea, daring it to take on the Ocean 182’s bow.

Sunseeker Ocean 182
The salon’s sole-to-ceiling windows measure 7 feet in height. Note the glass bulwarks to enhance views.

The helm has a single seat for the skipper, along with Garmin electronics, including twin 24-inch multifunction displays, a 96-nautical-mile radar, sonar, autopilot and AIS. There’s plenty of seating for guests at a modular U-shaped sofa, with lounges and chairs aft that can be configured to an owner’s taste.

During our time away from the dock, we saw 20-knot north winds and steady 4- to 5-footers trying to impose their will. A north wind against a north-flowing Gulf Stream always makes for a solid test of a yacht’s mettle, and there were no moans or groans from the Ocean 182. The yacht—with its efficient hull form, stout construction and CMC fin stabilizers—tipped that flybridge hat and didn’t flinch an inch.

Sunseeker Ocean 182
Creating a yacht with a proportional, well-balanced profile like this one is an impressive feat.

Optional twin 1,900 hp MAN V-12 diesel engines (1,650 hp MANs and 2,000 hp MANs are also available) got the 181,440-pound yacht up and running in efficient fashion. The Ocean 182 averaged 27-plus knots at wide-open throttle in the lumpy sea. At 12 knots, this craft can cruise nonstop for 1,147 nautical miles, considering a 5 percent fuel reserve on the 3,434-gallon fuel capacity.

The Sunseeker Ocean 182 is on point for performance, style and luxury. Sunseeker took extra care in optimizing finite real estate, and ensured that fixtures and entertainment spaces are at a high level of opulence. The yard’s creativity in penning such sleek exterior lines at this length overall is also an admirable achievement, one that many owners likely will tip their hats to.

Beach Club Plus

The aft deck converts to a beach club—and more. There’s a hydraulic platform for access to and from the water. It makes launching the water toys easy. With Sunseeker’s XTEND system, a double-wide chaise folds out via a transom door. Close it and flip up the transom door to reveal another seat, along with stowage for water toys. Or create a chaise that is level with the seating and accessible from the aft deck.

Take a Bow

Sunseeker created a foredeck lounge large enough for friends, friends of friends, and their friends too. This multi use space has a forward-facing bench seat, a three-person sun pad forward of that, and bench seating along the port and starboard bulwarks.

It’s not every day that prospective owners have the chance to purchase a zero-hour used yacht, but that’s exactly what’s available with Gravitas, a 2018 Sunseeker Predator 68.

Inside, the salon has a modern, yet warm interior, aided by woven oak soles, silver oak cabinetry and natural light via nearly 360 degrees of glass. When it’s time for a beverage, immediately to port is a cabinet with a wine cooler, glassware and bar stowage. Above is a 55-inch flat-screen pop up TV with a surround-sound entertainment system. Opposite, and to starboard, is a U-shaped white-leather settee. Forward to port, adjacent to the helm station, is an L-shaped dinette with two chairs, completing the salon’s seating arrangement.
